Football Banter Thread

Sunderland decorated a bar in the away part of their ground with Newcastle signage and slogans ahead of the FA Cup game on Saturday. Marco Gabbiadini says it's "embarrassing" but TBH I don't see what the problem is, apart from having spent some money to 'please' the fans of their bitterest rivals: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/67887975
It’s not the away part of the ground, it’s normally a home hospitality section, but because of the amount of tickets they have given us we also have that part of the ground

Aaah, that makes a bit more sense. Was reading one of the Sunderland forums and they aren't happy but more because the Mags will take the mick out of them than anything, too 'welcoming', 'simps', etc. are terms that were being thrown around. :D

To be fair it’s absolutely mental to re-do a bar area in your stadium with banners etc from a bitter rival for a derby match.

It’s one of the biggest and longest lasting rivalries in England. You’d never see Arsenal redecorating a bar area at the emirates with Spurs stuff or vice versa.

It all depends how it’s came about, whether it was signed off on by someone at the club or someone did it on the sly who’s managed to get access.

The statement mentions “error in judgment” which suggests it was known about.

Fair point, permanent decoration like signs is a bit far.

The Sunderland forum I read reckoned “senior management” had approved it.

Nothing was going be permanent but that’s not really the point. You don’t appease your bitter rivals by making your ground more hospitable for them. It’s unheard of which is why the story has gone viral and made them look a laughing stock.

From what I’d seen on X, this is just one of many poor decisions from the club in the lead up to this fixture.

Thread is not intended to be banter as in jokey (though it has gone that way), it was meant for smaller discussion that probably doesn't merit a seperate thread

For those that missed it, Phil's a big Evertonian and replied to a Daily Mail tweet about Liverpool's win last night with "Absolute ****s" :D
