Football, just a working class cult?

Wasn't it a case that football was originally for upper class and rugby for the lower class. Funny how that's changed somewhat.

Fox, your question wouldnt be classed as trolling in SA. Just because motors jumps on people doesn't mean SA is the same :p

There is still a thug element to football and some of it's fans. It's easier to control fans when segregated.

I love football, have played it since I was old enough to walk. While I support Spurs, if I am not playing (just at grass roots level) I would prefer to watch a local match involving Exeter City. At this level it is not filled with prima donnas only interested in diving around and cheating to pick up their 80K a week check.

It's a pathetic game that's popular because it gets the subconscious need to fight out of their system, but they are more often than not too wimpy to actually fight so they follow a silly game where a ball is kicked around.

Once one stands and bangs, the idea of football being any good goes straight out the window.

lol your a meathead, i love UFC, and i love playing football. but i dont think i would wanna risk my looks for the sake of an adrenaline rush i could get from football.

There is no point at all in arguing with football haters. They enjoy taking the moral high ground and somehow think they are superior for not liking it.

As for your post shifty, you definitely grew up in one of the most extreme examples possible. Just about everyone I know and associate with loves football and can talk about it without resorting to the sort of rubbish that you saw on facebook about the recent old firm matches.

Ah, a football thread in GD. The opportunity for me to ask a question I've always wanted to ask but would be considered trolling if I asked it in Sports Arena.

How come at a football match, the Home and Away fans are kept away from each other yet at a Rugby Match you can sit where you want they will happily serve you alcohol?

completely different culture. a 19 stone prop will listen to everything a rugby official has to say and respect his decision. a 12 stone striker will turn his back on a football official and swear at his decision.
a rugby player will never wind up the oppositions fans if they score a try unlike football. anyone who says the footballers have more passion is deluded, most football players are just classless.
both are great sports but there is a lot wrong in football.

rugby only gets played in private/posh schools, therefore most rugby fans are indeed from a more privileged background. whereas football gets played in schools in rougher areas.

when i moved schools to the north side of glasgow, i was shocked to find nobody played football here, just rugby.

its a bit like asking why tennis supporters can sit next to each other or fencing, etc.

In a way, yes it is. The game has its roots in working class culture and virtually all top players come from working class backgrounds (22/25 of the last England World Cup squad, IIRC).

As a spectator sport, it's been becoming more middle class since all seater stadiums and the Premier League were introduced.

Fulham has a neutral section. Never any trouble there.

The only violence I've seen at football matches in the last 5 years has come from Neanderthal Chelsea fans. Fans from other clubs have come to realise that it isn't the 70s any more.

True in most cases but I disagree, rugby is open to all. Infact, a good few chaps I went to school with ended up playing in amateur to semi-pro rugby league(?) teams. I was even invited to join the local teams when I was a teenager.

rugby only gets played in private/posh schools, .

this may be true in large but it's not the rule. rugby is a bit difficult to 'go and have a throw around' whereas football is far more accessable. i played at school and joined a club. it's an incredibly tough sport and the fitness levels need to be top of the scale to go pro and of course the financial side of things as far as players wages is concerned is dwarfed by football.

They even sacked a 20 oldish northerner who was teaching History and wanted to start a football club at my old private school
They soon realized that sacking teachers would not work as there would always be another teacher wanting to start one up. It just show how elitist even mediocre private schools are.

That's just not true. It might be true of parts of Glasgow but it's not true of all of Scotland or indeed the UK.

Glasgow is Scotland,

Edinburgh is really the only other city of note and its posh.

what are the population stats like?

5 million in scotland, 4 million of them living in glasgow? something like that?
