Just got Football Manager 2006 and haven't really played a football management sim seriously in a while, think the last one was one of the Champs.
I like playing em though (started out with Football Manager on the C64 :D) but I've also lost touch with football a fair bit in recent years too :o Used to be an avid Newcastle supporter and kept track of everything in the world of football....then video games took over :o

Anyway, just wondering if anyone's got any useful tips for the game?
I've started as Newcastle, doing fairly averagely although at least Owen's scoring a fair few goals. Also got an Argentinian striker called Pablo Vitti who's not bad for his age either but he's just been injured for 2 months :(

Some players to aim for. Ignore the injured status as that's the team i'd normally play.

And tactics. The default tactic is 4-4-2 Free but i've tweaked it a little.

With this squad and tactics, I can pretty much destroy anyone. Won the league 3 times in a row and won the champions league twice.

Well theres your problem right there :p as we say in the IT industry, you put garbage into a system you get garbage out ;)

Play to your strengths, come up with a formation that suits your players instead of the other way round, if you don't have a decent LB, play 3 at the back, because otherwise you'll be surrendering goals like crazy.

Have a look through the manual and read up on the all the different tactics, its quite useful. If you tell them to play counter attack and dont have players with pace and passing, then it'll fail. Likewise if you choose to play the offside trap, make sure your defenders have good positional attributes.

Oh and sell Boumsong ;)

Hmm not sure Boumsong, he's set up some decent opportunities lately, certainly doing better than a few others :/

I'll have a mess around with tactics thanks :)

Im also newcastle on this game, but the first thing i do is put all my defenders mentality on high defensive with little creative freedom, and also obviosly with newcastle defenders were my first concernt, so i bought in Anthony Vanden Borre, and for left back Giorgio Chiellini check them out will help stop leaking goals a bit.

Thanks :)
I'm slowly realising just how complex and detailed this game can get :o Liking it though.

Thanks :) I'll have a go with that formation and try to track down some of those players.
Just switched my defenders to what you said, and also switched my two forwards to very creative and attacking and won a match vs Everton 3-1 :D No idea if I can keep that up though hehe.

Annoyingly Shay Given within a few weeks of starting decided he wanted to leave Newcastle, his performance plummeted and then he ended up going to Barcelona. I probably could have done better to encourage him to stay but was still learning even more than I am now :o

tut tut been liverpool, your from boro :P

i got middlesbrough 5th in my first season and 4th in my second, a great striker to sign if youve got enough money is pazzini from fiorentina, he will cost about 8mill but is only 20 and bangs in the goals like there is no tomorrow, him and yakubu up front for me where great (i sold nemeth, viduka and hasselbaink straight away)

after 2 seasons chelsea signed pazzini off me for 24.5mill not a bad profit imo :)

also look into training a lot more, ive found making individual schedules for each position helped a lot with stat improvement etc :)

Pazzini is awesome. I'm dissappointed with Tevez, he only scored about 15 league goals when he should be on about 25+. And he's worth 28 million. Cisse is my top scorer and is only worth 15 million :(

Tried to do a straight swap with Tevez for Pazzini (who is now at Bayern) and is worth 14 million but Bayern wouldn't have it :(

Ohh and I was Boro in my last game and wanted a change :)

Well after spending most of my day off yesterday playing through the season and after following Rebel=UK='s tactical advice, I'm now up to 6th place from languishing near the relegation zone :D
So I'm happy :) Pity Shearer's retiring though, he's a good goal scorer.

Guys I need a strong defensive midfielder for my Arsenal team (like Wenger I am also trying to patch the hole left by Viera!). Any suggestions? Thanks
How much have you got left to spend? If you've got over £10m get Javier Mascherano. If you have about £5m left get Tomas Sivok.

Guarin is a good buy as well and should be a lot cheaper then those two at about £1.5m

Cesar Delgado from an Argentinian side is an excellent striker - cost me £5m in my first season with Bolton. Now worth 20m at Arsenal after I got the sack :)

Hmm I try to buy him but can never get a permit for him, even on appeal.

Managed to get him straight away. Got work permit on appeal. Only problem is I had to wait a year since he was on loan at Boca.

I think the permit's are a lot more random on uncapped players in this version. I've tried to get ahold of that South African Lebohang Mokeona but my appeal is always rejected but I know plenty of people who have managed to get permits for him.
