For goodness sake Tesco, sort your '[insert generic name] Pay' out.

I think your best option is to ask your card provider why it gets declined

ApplePay is unlimited, or something like £20,000 either way it’s something Tesco have put it place to limit it which is stupid of them or them trying to get you to use their Tesco Pay

It's self checkout, from what I remember, there's a single option for contactless, it doesn't specify Apple Pay, that's all lumped under the same thing. Up until recently, the Apple Pay limit was either £40 or £45 but it was raised to £100. Tesco were slow to raise this limit compared to other retailers. It's the only place I've been to where the Apple Pay limit is the same as contactless, everywhere else I've used it, there's effectively no limit. It still surprises some shop workers who mistakenly think that there is a limit but I've used Apple Pay for purchases well over £1000 in the past.

We're doing the rest of our Christmas food shopping tomorrow, I doubt very much if we'll be going over £100 then but I'll take a shot of the checkout where it says what the limit is.
I just press the card payment thing then slap my phone against the reader instead of delivery letter post, it still brings up contactless when I've tried. If that doesn't work I think your store's machines have some dodgy OS. I usually get a cashier checkout for big shops but I've done more than a hundred at the self checkout a couple of times.

Harlequin is not wrong £250 is the limit for Apple/Google pay in Tesco. Suggesting reporting or suspending him for having a more informed view is comical. Two possible reasons for Feek frothing at the mouth.

1) Feek lives in a sketchy neighbourhood so there is a local limit on contactless payments in that store to stop shrinkage.

2) Less likely, but the tills in Feeks local store are really old and dont support the higher limits. Tesco are in the process of updating/replacing their till estate but still lots of older NCR machines out there with outdated software.

How can it be so cheap

Guessing Just toiletries alone got cost £20 to £25 of that £60 to 70 for 4 people
So you be left with around £40 for food & drink for 4 people not counting needing other things like sugar, salt, Butter, Sauces, Coffee, Tea bags etc

£20-25 on toiletries a week?! Unless you're including things like makeup and aftershave then it's a fraction of that.

I should point out that those 4 people are 2 adults 2 kids (10 & 2), so although we may spend a bit less on food, that's probably balanced out by needing to buy nappies, wipes and a never ending supply of laundry liquid.

It doesn't include short life things like milk & bread which we top up every couple of days, but otherwise covers pretty much everything for meals for the week, plus household stuff like washing up liquid, loo roll, laundry stuff etc.

I imagine he's "frothing at the mouth" because Harlequin clearly isn't reading his posts. Sounds like option 2 the most likely scenario here, since he isn't even given the option if the total is over £100

As I've already posted, and AFAIK I live nowhere near Feek, my local Tesco used to accept >£100 for Apple Pay, but it is now not working. I have spoken to the card issuer and they say no transaction has been attempted except where I put the card and PIN in, therefore it's a store issue IMO.

I was just about to post the same thing. Tesco IIRC have brought their platform, payments and touchpoints in house and as such are clearly releasing on an iterative basis and I suspect A B testing which might also explain the difference experiencing when paying.

I ditched Tesco for Asda.

Even though I was a weekly online customer of Tesco's for 13 years from 2007-2020, they never offered me a delivery slot during the lockdowns. However, as a new customer of Asda (never used them before), they offered me a slot every week without fail. So yes there is no such thing as customer loyalty i.e. 13 years vs 0 years, but I have stuck with Asda as of December 2022 (and just renewed my yearly delivery contract) out of principle.

I did exactly the same.

It states on the card machine that contactless is limited to £100. I don't think it matters whether it's card or card via apple pay.

Different stores will have different limits i'm sure, and different card machines.

That’s just for using your card via contactless, not authorising Apple Pay via FaceID or your fingerprint.

I have a further update to this.

This evening, I've been out to complete the Christmas shopping. I started off in Sainsbury, the total was around £160 and it went straight through on their till using Apple Pay with an associated Amex card.

Then to Tesco where the bill was just under £120. We had a little over £15 in discount coupons which took the bill down to £103.56. We were using the scan and shop checkouts.

I tried to pay using Apple Pay on my watch with three different credit cards, one Amex and two Mastercards and three different debit cards (Monzo, Chase and Starling) and each time, the machine got grumpy with the £100 limit. If anyone's interested, this was the big Tesco Express at Colchester Highwoods.

There is a small notice on the top of the screen:

NMyKCAn.jpeg

I called the assistant over who said "Yeah, it doesn't work. It's never worked, the limit is still £100 for Apple Pay, that's not right". He removed one item from the basket which took it down under £100, I paid that and then made another transaction for that item.

So my thread title is still accurate.

For goodness sake Tesco, sort your '[insert generic name] Pay' out.

But perhaps it needs an addendum.

Stop pretending it's £250 and fix the damn thing.

Well technically they were right, it should be £250 but in practise, it isn’t. The guy who came over didn’t even hesitate, he was straight away looking to see what he could remove to drop the bill below £100 so this is clearly a common thing.

Exactly the same in my local Tesco.
