I know this has been mentioned before on here but a report on punctuation on the BBC just now was saying how punctuation has changed through the years.

Some woman stated that proper punctuation/grammar in a formal situation is very important as not using proper punctuation/grammar would be like turning up to an interview in scruffy jeans and t-shirt. She further stated that not using punctuation/grammar in a formal situation makes you look "frankly, stupid"

Personally I think proper punctuation/grammar/spelling is quite important. Even in a non-formal situation like on an internet forum, I don't think ignoring it completely should be deemed acceptable. I agree that it can be relaxed slightly e.g. missing apostrophes in certain words like "dont" or "wont" but some of the posts on here are littered with such poor spelling/grammar that you have to read it a couple of times.

"Am doing this tomorrow" instead of "I am doing this tomorrow"
"Top draw material" instead of "Top drawer material"
"Theyre socks" instead of "Their socks"
"It is being trailed" instead of "It is being trialled"

So have at it Grammar Nazis, what's your views :p

When im using my phone to make posts punctuation is the least of,my worries. If im doing my CV or sending a letter to the queen then I'll worry about it.

The trailed/trialed thing is probably crap typing skills more than anything. Oh, and you missed out one of my personal hates, people using the word "then" when they mean to use "than".

 :p

Nothing worse than seeing someone using your/you're, or their/there incorrectly in emails, especially in a work environment.

Basic education should have taught you the difference.

Correct spelling and grammar is critical.

I hate this one with a passion.

+1

I had a staff member who did this all the time in formal communication with suppliers and customers. It is one letter! When I pointed it out to him, he could not see the problem. It was like I was actually teaching him when he should have learnt it at school.

I personally blame texting which has taught people to use as few words as possible to convey meaning. It has been allowed to spill over into other forms of communication when it should not have.

Your gay!

Your gay, what? What about my gay? Hey?

I could have said your stupid...

I of? No I of. You could have said your stupid, but your stupid what? Brain can't cope with English?

Hmmph

One of the women in my office consistently talks about things she "done". Not things she has done, just things she done. "I done that yesterday."

She also talks about masses in gram. "We've got 3 gram of sample." YOU'RE MEANT TO BE A SCIENTIST!

If you want to type poorly, that's fine.
You will however, look like a retard.

You may have the argument that it doesn't matter on forums, it's only casual.
If so, why is it any more or less effort to do it correctly, than incorrectly.
If you pick up those casual bad habits, you'll end up typing it in a situation where you really shouldn't.

That'll learn em to type proper. ;)

I completely agree with this.

Failure to type properly makes you potentially appear stupid and also makes it seem like you don't really care about a particular subject.

It's almost no extra effort either, it's strange how so many people struggle with it.

I also agree. I don't think anyone on these boards expects to read grammatical perfection every day, but, quite simply, if you write like you rolled your face across the keyboard then prepare to have your posts ignored.

I completely agree. If someone cannot be bothered to put the effort into typing a coherant sentence then why should I take the time to try and help them?

That is the first thing I notice in a post over everything else. God, I really am getting old and intolerant :p

Some people will say "as long as you get the meaning of my post then it shouldn't matter about my spelling or grammar". Although there is some credence to this, it has gotten to the point where people CAN'T understand your posts as the words/sentences you are using (through typos or poor punctuation) make it impossible to understand.
