Ford Ecoboost 1.0 Cambelt Changes starting to be due @ £1000+

What's involved in just removing the oil strainer and cleaning it out? Is that just removing the sump? So possible to do as part of each oil change say... I'm sure there's more to it but just was wondering if it was feasible to do as a maintenance item.

By the time it blocks the oil strainer it's usually damaged the engine beyond repair.

hmm is that the ZF transmission that is on beamers merc and some jags? people saying oil never needs to be changed but ZF themselves say it has to be changed and give an interval time too.

with the ecoboost wet belts, anyone had one snap or are people just annoyed that they were led on it to be a lifetime thing and was then given a limited life span.

I think it all comes from oil usage across the fleet being part of the manufacturer's green credentials. But it's a complicated machine with robotics, it needs oil changes.

My son's 2020 focus ST Line has currently been sat at the dealer ship since 07/12/23 with a the same belt fault , currently an argument going on between the dealership and warranty company as the engine might be fubar . Costs raging from £3.7 to £9k 32k miles on the clock fully servived

2020 Focus doesn't have the wet cam belt, it has a timing chain.

The oil pump belt is internal, but that isn't known to cause issues like the degredation of the wet cam belt on older engines.

Ford are saying the belt clogged the oil pump causing a major failure of the engine , the only warning he got was a oil pump failure 100m from home it went into limp mode then died on the driveway wouldn't even start up . Just before it died the engine sounded like pots and pan's falling down the stairs

They must be talking about the oil pump belt then. But it's the first I've heard of it causing an issue. The revised engines should be more reliable with a timing chain as the oil pump belt isn't under as much strain.

Had it been serviced per schedule with the correct oil? Usually the wet cam belts degrade from lack of maintenance, wrong oil, engine flush, etc. I'd assume the same could damage the oil pump belt.

It had been serviced at the start of February 2023 he bought the car late February from the same dealership, service was due this February .

Official Recall (America) for the 1.0 Ecoboost that identifies the actual cause of the failing belts as tensioner failure:

Interestingly it only calls out "The problem is found in the 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine used in model year 2016-2018 Focus hatchbacks and 2017-2022 EcoSport SUVs."

Despite that many people have had issues with models prior to 2016. Also that's the US so I wonder which Euro models might be affected. The plot thickens.

I thought 2020 was a cross over year, quite likely the engine change was phased across the different vehicles they use the engine in.

I blame the 18k oil changes, my 10 year old focus serviced every 5k since new was in great condition when stripped.

Not in the focus. The mk4 Focus had the revised chain cam engine from day 1. So all Mk4 2018 onwards.

The fiesta has a changeover, although all mHEVs are chain. I believe all Puma are also chain. But Focus is 100% chain if it’s a mk4 onwards.
