Ford Vignale

I never said it would :p

Oh speaking of the Koreans, I had a Hyundai i40 hire car a couple of months ago. ...

the interior certainly wasn't any higher quality than any Ford (or Vauxhall, or French car) I've driven. Quite a nice drive though, but I think they've still got a bit of a way to go.

Not really sure the Hyundai is trying to compete with anything above a Ford in all fairness.

It was more in reference to rodenal's comment about Hyundai/Kia interiors matching/exceeding Ford. Which I disagree with. But then I've gathered that he isn't Ford's biggest fan :p.

I certainly prefer the ceed to the mk3 focus and I personally think the latest optimas interior is at least on a par with any Ford I've seen

I was more commenting on the way people tend to dismiss the Koreans because they've driven an older example and or buy into the British motoring press hype on Ford.

I actually don't dislike fords in the slightest (half considering a Mondeo right now) but just don't see them as stand out cars from an interior point of view. I find it particularly odd when the likes of the insignia is dismissed by people but the Mondeo held up as some sort of halo car (I know you're not), as I find very little to separate them.

They do some things really well - comfort/handling balance and things like sync (for the price point) being highlights

The vaginal tries to change that a little bit, but they've been too ambitious on price

So this is Ford's answer to Audi, i.e. humdrum underpinnings with a nicer interior.
Surely as Brits we'll lap this up...errr

The funny thing is that Ford do seem to genuinely be more reliable that VAGs nowadays, so it's probably a better car than the equivalent Audi too. Almost a shame that it won't sell.

Ford service is rubbish when the gearbox went pop on my year old focus ST3 they wouldnt even give me a courtesy car and it took them 3 weeks to fix it costing me loads in hire car costs. Apparently they only give courtesy cars priority to customers with cars under 12months.

No one will buy it because it's too expensive.
If it's priced to compete with Audi / BMW then it's priced to fail. It doesn't matter if it's a better car in every way. People will happily pay the same money for a BMW with a tiny diesel engine, cloth seats, basic nav, an M-Sport bodykit, and 20" rims, because what the car looks like on the outside and what badge is on the back is more important than anything else.

This, sadly. :(

Not a single pic? never heard of this Ford, I had to open a new tab to look up pics. A new tab!

It does look a bit dopey.

Yes, I have to say I have absolutely no idea why a number of makes are bringing brown (or metallic brown as now seems popular) back. It looked **** in the 70s, and it looks **** now. Only, of course, as cars are more rounded and larger now, they look even more like **** as well.

Lots of people were buying high spec Mondeos and other models already, so there's some potential headroom in the market for those who already like their more well-equipped Fords. Personal opinion is that this isn't an attempt to beat the premium Marques at their own game. More the opportunity to buy a modern Ford that's been finished to a higher standard and with promise of better dealership service. Whether that comes through we will see but I'd like to think it will pull up general standards too.

Sat in one of these recently and found it very pleasantly finished although not really in the way we see typically from German brands. This is something different.

Not sure why you guys are surprised Ford trying (again) to make an executive saloon, all the brands do it, Citroen with the DS6 (better effort than the vignale tbh, though terrible engines), Peugeot do the 60x series, VW had the phaeton (though I guess bit diff since they have Audi), Volvo S80.... If it's not a sports car to 'revive' the brand it's an executive saloon to drive prices up. I don't know if the logic holds up but management seem to eat it up.

The logic always used to be that all cars cost about the same to make.

But big executive luxury models can be charged more for and are therefore more profitable than small shopping trolleys.

Manufacturers always try to encourage people to buy the bigger models (And the MkII/MkIII version of a range is always bigger/more luxurious than the MkI)

They also try very hard to get you to "Load" it.

(The old saying was "The base model is nailed to the show room floor!"

Why are people comparing broadspeed prices for a BMW against list prices for a ford with loads of options added?

The 2.0 TDCi 180 auto is a few grand cheaper than a 520D auto - sounds appropriately priced for what they're aiming for

If anyone cares to find out why ford has chosen the name see here https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vignale So an italian coachbuilder, along with ghia, that ford purchased and have used the name before. However, like most things, people misunderstand something 'foreign sounding'.
As for the price, this starts at under £30k however prices can be had for £25k if you look hard enough which is less than I paid for my a3 with discount and has more equipment. But would I buy one, yes at those discounted costs but whether ford would honour the 'customer experience' when purchased from a broker I don't know...

Ford's strategy seems a bit odd, so they are going to make slightly more upscale versions of their regular cars and just add the Vignale branding on them? They don't look distinctively different enough and at the end of they day it's still a Mondeo and looks like one.

Citroen have done the same thing but I think they have now spun off the DS brand as its own now to separate it from Citroen brand. I wonder how many more manufacturers are going to do this, Hyundai are also going launch Genesis brand.
