Foreign film recommendations

Motorcycle Diaries i always found excellent which hasn't been mentioned yet.

Theres a german one who's name escapes me too which is really annoying me!

Not the one your talking about, but you've just reminded me of Steven Soderbergh's Che 1 & 2 which were both very good.

Cyrano de Bergerac (1990)
Jean de Florette (1986)
Manon des Sources (1986)

The eighth day
Grand bleu
37.2C la matin
love me if you dare
taxi 1998 - the original and probably the best

Just Watch is the best streaming database type website/app I know.

so what is the point in netflix and prime when they have none of these ? I don't subscribe to any of them, or nowtv, but thought they would give some flexibility.
not just their own home brew inferior quality stuff

There have been a few German films mentioned earlier in the thread. Guessing it wasn't any of those?

Yeah none that struck that chord so to speak.

From memory it was about a couple of teens and anarchy trying to fight the system etc. Think they set something on fire. There's a specific actor in it i can picture but can't think of the names of the other films he's been in either.

My memory sucks :(

EDIT - Found it. The Edukators

Fritz Lang's Metropolis
Cinema Paradiso
Rashomon
Solaris (Andrei Tarkovsky)
Stalker (Andrei Tarkovsky)
Das Experiment
Hard Boiled (John Woo)
The Killer (John Woo)
Night Watch / Day Watch films (Timur Bekmambetov)
Headhunters
Spirited Away
Howl's Moving Castle

Ah, it has Daniel Brühl from Rush in it. RIP Niki Lauda.

I watched a lot if these with the old Lovefilm disk by post system, that was ideal for the more obscure films. Now though not so easy as you say.

I've just checked and Cinema Paradiso is still going. Cinema Paradiso whilst also a film listed on this discussion is a disk by post place that originally specialised in foreign films, hence the name.

I would recommend giving them a go, free trial available so why not? Might even reinstate my account...

Some of my favourites, which I don't think have yet been mentioned;
Point Blank (2010 Fr. A Bout Portant)
Tell No One (2006 Fr. Ne le dis à personne)
Elite Squad 1 & 2 (2007 & 2010 Br. Tropa de Elite)

The rest have already been mentioned, especially Headhunters (2011 Nor. Hodejegerne) which is brilliant.

Off the top of my head without to many repeats:

The Raid (Indonesia)

A Separation (Iran)

Good Bye Lenin (German)

Battle Royal (Japanese)

A Girl at my door (Korean)

Hard Boiled (Hong Kong)

Blue is the Warmest Color (French)

Leviathan (Russian)

Angel-A (French)

BenX (Dutch/Belgian )

Then Skin I live in (Spanish)

Infernal Affairs is great, personally liked it more than The Departed.
Oldboy and The Handmaiden, both with the same director
Hable con Ella
In the Mood for Love, Chungking Express
The Piano Teacher
A Separation, The Salesman

Some good suggestions in here.
Could try;
The Return - very bleak Russian film
13 Tzameti - really good french thriller
Funny Games - the original French version. The director remade it in English and it wasn’t as good.
Bicycle Thieves
Edit: thought if another one: Rare Exports. Not so good but a good take on a Christmas film.
Also Troll hunters

For something that doesn’t require too much thinking try Red Cliff part 1 & 2 they’re both pretty long but they’re Jon Woo films so it’s basically well choreographed non-stop action for about 3 hours.

ohh, good shout, another top one!
My dear fellow you forget yourself, there are over 20 of these superb films :)

Cinema Paradiso is great.
Hard Boiled I had on Laser Disk years ago, it's ok but was a little B-movie.
Awesome films, Night/Day watches changed my perception of russian cinema, the quality is superb.
Howls is just brilliant. Just brilliant.
