Forgetting your phone

I guess mine is really just a glorified PDA

Largely what my phone has become. I have no problem with web-browsing on mine (I usually go for the "phablet" type devices) but I wouldn't choose to spend a lot of time doing it that way and gaming I'd have to be pretty desperate to kill time especially as I prefer keyboard and mouse for gaming.

I leave my tech and media addiction at home. If I touch my phone its for a call or text.

There's something itchy about looking for entertainment or time wasting or ultra casual chat on a little gadget in public or at work.

So while there would be drama if I lost my phone it wouldn't be because I miss its comfort. Just a tool I'd be annoyed at losing.

Restaurants seem to have become a lonely/odd experience for many people now. The wife and I never get our phones out and just you know talk to one another when we are having a meal. However the amount of tables you see in total silence because everyone is on their phones is ridiculous. Can't people talk face to face anymore and enjoy the company of the person actually sitting with them.

Also people who work out the exact bill need to be hit on the nose with a rolled up newspaper but that's another matter.

Truth.

The amount of times I've been out with a group of friends and there's always at least one person who spends the meal on Facebook or texting other friends. If you want to be out with them that much, f'n go out with them instead! Bizarre.

Phone is on silent 24/7. I use it for making a few calls, texts, work emails and on rare occasions, web browsing when traveling. However, I'm not registered on any social media sites. I often rib pals who constantly pull out their mobiles at bars and restaurants. They think I'm an anti social deviant!?!?

Same, mine is on silent it's used 90% fit web browsing the odd call home. Guess I have a net addiction rather than phone addiction.

Would not make much difference to me if I left mine at home.

I use it for calls, text and whatsapp. I can't use my phone while at my desk or have it on display and can only use it when on a break or lunch

It lives on silance as well as I always forgot to take it off when the weekend comes round.

I was in London last Thursday / Friday and could not believe the amount of people walking around staring at their phones! Have things really got this bad?

I guess it's down to how much and what you use your mobile for.

I have no social media accounts and use my phone for what it was meant for, calls, texts and a bit of whatsapp and because of this I hardly use my phone and if I'm walking somewhere I have my phone in my pocket as not needed.

Just reminded me when I did work on a site some 15 odd years ago. Site only allowed intrinsically safe cell devices. That meant, personal mobiles were prohibited on site. Bliss!

However, I did mean that all IT engineers were issued intrinsically safe pagers ... *beep beep beep* all day long!

The theory is that it stops people being distracted while on the phone to customers or doing other things on their phone. We are a help desk so no cusomters would see your phone, can't even charge your phone either.

Yes; people dawdling about utterly oblivious to interrupting the flow of pedestrian traffic. Had a few throw expletives at me too when they’ve inadvertently bumped into me and dropped their phones.

I completely subscribe to prohibiting mobiles in most work environments. You can still be contacted in emergencies on the companies landline.

The things are an utter distraction in all walks of life. *Grrrrrr humbug*

Whilst I agree that it's a bit sad, it's their choice to do so. If that's how they want to spend their evening then so be it! I don't see it as any different to reading the paper at breakfast.

The appeal of a smartphone for me isn't any of the apps or games. But it is nice that it combines a sat nav, phone, camera, calendar/alarm, SMS/email into a single device.

So whilst you won't find me checking social media on mine, if I'm more than 5m away from my house you will see me using the maps :p (I'm so directionally challenged and useless at finding my way anywhere, it's absurd!!) And I do use it as a memory aide to make sure I don't miss a dentists appt, etc.

I guess mine is really just a glorified PDA.

But how anyone can use them for web browsing or gaming I have no idea. Stare at a tiny screen for so long? Not a chance. But then my eyesight is crap. And more importantly, I hate social media/web 2.0.

I don't need it for any of that, I have a Tom Tom in the van for nav and don't need a camera or calendar so it's basically for the odd call or text, hence it usually does 3 days between charges.

Thing is, me and my girlfriend don't know London well, so I was using my phone for navigation. But I still didn't just walk around staring at the screen. I stopped, found somewhere out of the way and then checked my phone.

I guess I'm just a little more consciousness than most....

It's a sad state of affairs really. I was at a small soft play area that is free in a shopping centre. While I was watching my son play and responding to him having a good time, every other parent was just glued to their phone completely ignoring their children.

On the train during my commute, it's a very surreal experience looking down the carriage to see 95% of people in that same hunched over phone position. I'll listen to music on my phone while on the train, but I don't ever feel the need to be glued to my screen.
