I guess mine is really just a glorified PDA.
Technically they are PDAs / PDA-phones. The term was coined by Sony-Ericsson for their P-series phones e.g. P910 and P990 starting in 2003/4. 'P' stood for PDA-phones. W-series were their Walkman phones, X-series were Xperia, R-series were radio phones, C-series were Cybershot (camera) phones and so on.
The idea of a PDA-phone is that it has touchscreen, internet capability (not just WAP but access to the WWW as well), plus the ability to install apps by both Java and via an app store. In my case the Orange app store for games like Worms by Team 17 on my Sony-Ericsson P910 back in 2005.
As usual, Apple comes along, takes an existing device/idea and they release a polished version. Hence they responded to the PDA-phone by releasing the iPhone.
Smartphone is just a buzzword imo. It's like referring to Facebook as being "social media" rather than social networking.
