Forgot how bad job searching was :(

Potentially, try looking at some schools. The one I worked at recently started to look at employing someone just to do some smaller bits, take a look around and see if they can give you a few hours a day or something? Just to get some experience up

Just a little update really!

Now been in oxford for a week and its going really well :D My partner moves out on the friday and we move into a flat together, should be good!

Love the job too, just need to step up and rise through the ranks now. But at least i'm finally in the industry!

So, needing to kill time until I start on tankers in October, I've been kicking around looking for agency work, and just this morning managed to land a contract for two weeks as 3rd Engineer on a dredger, the Sand Heron out of Shoreham for two weeks.

The only problem is I need to get there to join tomorrow, thus I face the prospect of having to cross London from Euston to Victoria at rush hour, never having done it before.

Still, pleased to be doing something seeing as I was last at sea three months ago back at the end of April. :)

yah they got bought out by zynga earlier in the year and do all the animation stuff for GTA / rockstar so, a decent company to get into :D pop your cv/etc to my trust :P

oh dear seems even though im trying to get myself sorted the jobcentre still feel the need to play about like idiots. just gotten a letter informing me i have to attend a interview with a compliance officer in 2 weeks.

wonder what the chances are that someone saw me working (while on mandatory work activity a few weeks ago) and dropped me in it.

well the meeting tomorrow is about when i did a single 12 hour shift in october 2011. yes nearly 3 sodding years ago. which i told my adviser about at the time, who told me "its ok" and nothing else was said about it.

all the rather snotty woman on the phone said is that i had to come in and make a statement, why do i get the feeling il be sanctioned because its my word against their paperwork.

really getting sick of these muppets.

....And just like that, we're back on track. Now have a start date of September 8th instead of sometime in October, joining the British Purpose in Malaysia for three months, where it's currently being used as a storage tanker in the Straits of Malacca.

It'll be nice to be home for Christmas, which was looking like it was off the cards for a while, plus no more scrabbling around fighting for agency work, whilst worrying if I can pay the bills over the next few months, which is a massive weight off my mind.

I hope it doesn't happen to you, but in my experience any chance the JC can get to take someone off the books they'll take it.

well im not being sanctioned as its taken so long for the system to catch me up. it should have been delt with 2-3 months after i worked the shift, so now they are just happy for me to pay back what i got over paid at the time.

but i didnt get any sort of apology or anything for being left sat here nearly 3 weeks doing my nut in expecting to be sanctioned for 13 weeks.

the adviser even admitted the systems not up to it and they need to change it but wont.

Hello all, just after some thoughts....

In short I don't want to stay in IT Support, I either need to retrain in to a separate profession, or find another job in IT, my main question is, what other sort of jobs can people think of that are in IT?

I know there are tons, I'm just after peoples thoughts

Development, architecture, security, pre-sales, project management are a few areas you could look at.

Or if you're end user support now there's more systems type support, dba etc.

Decided I no longer want to continue my career coding ( only 3-4 years and that was all in game development) after taking some time off since I was made redundant. Would just like some kind of work involving computers still in an office enviroment in London but no idea where to even start looking when I have no experience outside of coding :(

What are the reasons for getting out of coding? That'll determine what you'll be suited to, as many IT related professions will include at least *some* coding or at the very least scripting of some sort.

I've been doing my job for a while now, and I have to say: investment banking is the way forward. The hours are pretty long (I made the mistake of thinking 8:30-6pm was normal hours hahahhahaha (turns out they were being kind in training me up), but the pay is phenomenal, and more importantly the work is quite interesting in terms of pace, reward and the various challenges it presents. Would definitely recommend. :)

(I've learnt to hate tax rates though)
