I used a monopod at the Supercar meet at silverstone last year and got some good results , the best thing with them is the camera is always at eyeline ready for any "interesting" action.

Was talking to Joe about this other day, anytime what idea it all starts in the morning? Last time I got there about mid-morning but on Wednesday I would be looking to get there early to go back home about lunchtime...just one of the many things I am trying to make next week!

Hopefully going down to the venue with antc and his new found friend CANON 100-400 L IS. It will make my sigma 28-200mm dg feel miniscule. Ive not been to F1 before, really looking forward to it! only been to donny park to see a test day but that was good. hopefully my 200mm will be sufficient on the day. :)

Donn't bother with a Monopod, the 100-400L IS is light enough to hand hold all day.

it is another thing to carry i suppose. although i have been to donnington for another testing session today and by the time i was home my left arm was about ready to drop off :)

got some good first shots with it so will post them up soon when i have shopped them.

has anyone checked the weather forecast yest for the three days at all?? hope its not going to rain, i want some sun :D

BBC 5 day forecast says drizzle for Tues and Weds :(

I believe it kicks off around 9am.

A monopod is only realyl useful if you have a lens too heavy to handhold, such as mine! All others should be fine handheld.

Good news on the lens purchase antc! I guess you went to a local retailer?

Joe :)

I really really want to go to this. For the photo opportunities and the spectacle of F1 cars. However I'm still not sure if I can make it.

Any idea on what time the testing finishes each day?

damn and drat about the weather :(

yeah i went to a local retailer who after a bit of bartering price matched the best price i found on the net :)

so when i get by cash back voucher book the lens will work out like £30 more than importing it, so i quite happy with that.

it was the last one they had in the shop and was one of only 2 left in nottingham according to the shops i contacted.

Updated list:
  1. Joe T - Tues and Weds
  2. ranarama - Thurs
  3. antc - Weds and/or Thurs

  6. Joe T's brother - Weds afternoon
  7. Frosty - Thurs
  8. howell80 - Weds and/or Thurs
  9. TomWilko - Weds
Plus xolotl as a maybe

So, no-one up for Tuesday then? :p

This may seem like a strange request, but I am putting it anyway...chances are I will be there Wednesday and obviously there is every liklihood I will bump into a few of you, any chance of getting peoples names here next to user ID? Because there's no way I am going round calling people what they have listed on here.

For reference, TomWilko = Tom :p

what sort of lense would i need for good shots of fast cars (be it F1 or any other racers)??

ive preorderd a Canon S3 IS (which is like 12x zoom) but im still thinking about getting a Canon 350D but can really only afford the 18-55 default canon lense :o would that be too short?

Frosty == Simon, but most people call me Frosty anyway.

I've never been before, but I've bought a Sigma 70-300 to take with me this week. 55mm isn't long enough to get a decent close up unless you're pretty close to the car (ie a few metres away)

From the corner everyone gets put on, 200mm + should be reasonable, although 300mm range is definately preferred.

12x optical zoom will be plenty.
