Found a large spider when i got home.

I can't believe the amount of absolute wusses on this forum.

Scared of a house spider... pansies.

I know, i wish i could help it but spiders absolutely freak me out. Nothing has the effect on me that they do and it annoys the crap out of me. I can deal with blood, gore, violence, all water off a ducks back but i cant deal with spiders.

The Mrs was away for a few days and the largest house spider id ever seen ran out from under the fireplace. Naturally I screamed, ran, got a washing up bowl and threw it over him. Three days it took me to move that bowl :(.

Are you sure? That's about 4x what it should be, mutant spider.

Quite sure. I didn't exactly measure it. That leaf is 1.5inches long so I guess that would actually put the spider between 1-1.25inches long.

I've actually just found out that the spider you linked is not the one I have pictured.
The one in my picture is a Segestria spider. Though even still, this one is still a bit larger than it should be.

So, I think the one in the first picture is Segestria florentin. The second one is Segestria senoculata. Both of which are apparently commonly found in Bristol.

I dont mind picking up house spiders anymore, got bitten once too doesnt hurt really..got this red dot where it bit me, had it since I was about 12. Owned a Goliath bird eating tarantula for a while but got bored of it.:)

Ive seen that type of spider before on OcUK. Im pretty sure it has been previously identified as a -

Killitesca Withfiresca

Why do spiders freak me out so much? The funny thing is, if theres one in the house I wont let anyone kill it. Instead Ill stick a glass over it, slide something underneath and then stick it in the garden.

which will kill it. :D

Can anyone confirm something -

Apparantly if you remove a spider from your house and put it outside in your garden for example, it will come back to where you removed it from? Id understand if this was the case during mating season, but what about in general?

doesnt look particularly big - the 'Giant european House Spider' is quite common in england, looks like a small one of those.

i share my bedroom with 13 tarantulas - house spiders creep me out though, kill it, kill it with fire.

Oh yeah, I forgot the males are much bigger (twice the size of the females).

Other way around.

in almost all arachnid species the female is significantly larger than the male.

in tarantulas this is particularly apparent, also males live ~2years vs the females ~20year's :P

Are they more intelligent than normal spiders? Are they as intelligent as something like a rabbit? I mean why dont they bite you and all that?

no excuse! you are now forbidden from picking up on anyone's poor spelling and/or grammar

Those two furry things that looks like fangs do they end in sharp pointy bite of doom kind of things, or not?

ok.. you can check some of my spiders at http://pets.binary-pulse.co.uk

i've had spiders for coming close to a year and half now, and i have yet to be bitten.

Certain species i'll handle no problem, others i wont.

one i wont is 'kumo', my cobalt blue, it bites at ANYTHING.

my tarantulas vary in age (and therefore size)

my biggest is almost 6 inches legspan (when relaxed) and have fangs approximagelt 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch long, and my smallest can sit on a 5 pence piece (but will grow to 5 inches at least)

my favorites are the tree dwellers but these are almost impossible to handle because they're very fast and can take running jumps.

they're not 'intelligent' per say, but they do reason what they attack.. they know i'm nota cricket, because i dont vibrate the floor like a cricket would, so they would much much rather run away from me than bite me (except kumo)

one of my spiders (hayden) has worked out how to slide the glass open on tis terrarium, and does so without fail - so we've gaffer taped it shut - so they do have an iota of intelligence (i guess)..

a common misconception is that if you get bitten by a tarantula you've got 4 minutes to get to a hospital or die!.

the one on my hand above would be no worse than a couple of bee stings in terms of irritation and pain etc.

the cobalt blue seen above would be a bit worse (slightly more potent venom and a more violent bite)

only chance of my dying is if i'm allergic to their venom and go into anaphylactic shock - but here's to hoping!.
