Foxes

I have no problem with killing animals for a good reason, but if the problem can be easily resolved another way, surely that would be better?

Fox are vermin and in most areas there are too many of them. Vermin with a high population should be killed. Think of a Fox like a rat only about ten times worse.

Get a cat!

Although cat's are smaller than foxes they will NOT stand and fight a cat (unless her cubs are near in which case she'll try to chase the cat away!). Well, they may stand and fight the first time, but not the second!

Is that some sort of attempt at an explanation?

ever seen a fox jump?
ever seen what they DO once their INSIDE?
:D Unless foxes have mastered the art of pole-vaulting, they aren't going to be able to jump a reasonably high fence.

Oh and yes, I've seen a fox, and I have a reasonably good understanding of what they're capable of.

you gonna answer my question?

they are also good at digging too

unless you live in the county and have ACTUAL KNOLAGE of what foxes CAN and CAN'T do, I sujest you keep your preconseptions to yourself

Build a dual carriageway around your property.
Every morning it will be littered with the carcasses of dead foxes and the occasional badger.

Yes, I suppose it was. I do apologise if my English skills are not up to your standard, Sir.

My dad has a lot of problems caused by foxes, specifically the killing of animals, wrecking the back yard and crapping all over the place. The farmers in the surrounding area suffer similar problems but on a larger scale and as such employ people to shoot foxes. It has become financially viable for them to pay someone to kill foxes, which goes to show how much damage these vermin actually cause.

ever seen HOW HIGH A FOX CAN JUMP?
Have you?

Coyotes are bigger and stronger than foxes and can jump 6' fences. It's interesting to note that the jump is not a one step process where the animal completely clears the fence:

"In fact, the “jump” consists of two phases. First, the coyote jumps to grab hold of the top of the fence with its front paws. The coyote then adds to its vertical momentum by pulling on the top of the fence. This allows him to gain additional height. At the same time, he brings his back paws up to the top of the fence, so that momentary, all four of his paws are in contact with the top of the fence. All of this takes less than half a second! Next, the coyote then uses his back legs to spring off the fence, while he extends his front paws in preparation for landing."

the guys in the HTML/graphics forum think it constitues "fit girl"
as I suck at making sigs I put up with it

on topic, the owner of that website should be prosicuted, they are FEEDING vermin, if you did the same to a RAT you'ed be fined quite a bit of money.

I wasn't pointing out your poor use of English so the rolleyes is inappropriate. I was actually pointing out that the use of the word "vermin" is trite and meaningless.

Fair enough, though I'd still say that effective fences go a long way to preventing fox incursion. Has your dad tried any types of fences?

1: Where I live has *nothing* to do with how much knowledge I have on the subject. Geographical location does not automatically instill one with arcane knowledge about the behaviour of foxes.

2. They may be good at digging but we humans are pretty intelligent. Are you suggesting that the humble fox is perfectly capable of outwitting us? Do you know of no methods whatsoever that are effective at preventing the incursion of a mere fox?

3. Do you not see the irony of *you* telling me to keep my preconceptions to myself?

Apologies. I should have explained myself better, however I still consider foxes as vermin as do many others.

There aren't really any suitable fences which are guaranteed to keep foxes out and any which claim to do so cost an absolute fortune. Due to the layout of the fields in the area, a hedgerow is necessary to split them and as far as I know the hedgerows are protected by some sort of conservation law. I'm not too sure on the details but I think any suitable fences would be disallowed because they would block the hedgerow to other wildlife such as birds, badgers, rabbits etc.

Some farmers have tried the fox friendly methods but they are expensive and ineffective. There isn't really any other solutions left apart from killing the foxes. Remember though that they are killed out of necessity and not for sport.
