Another vote for MS Explorer 3.0, closely followed my Logitech MX510 then MX518. Like people have said its personal preference but I think we are just being bombarded with new gaming mice with higher and higher DPI more G acclearation etc. etc. just to get people to upgrade. Do we really need it? I play a lot of FPS and it may be that its what I learnt on but the MS3.0 is a lot more accurate for me than say a copperhead even though its "technically inferior"
Ive tried a few different mice and some would not track properly in Enemy Territory and would sometimes skip and be too sensitive (change sensitivity in game helped but still had problems, below is ones of tried and what I personally found of them playing ET, or any other FPS.
Razer Boomslang 2100 - Heard rave reviews everywhere I looked, Left/Right buttons were too large for me (liked the click on them though) DPI was too high and if I changed it it wouldnt track properly and skipped or even worse froze, also it seemed to on flicks move upward slightly however level I kept the mouse, liked the feeling of the ball which gave it added weight around bottom of mouse. Shape made hands ache after a while.
Logitech MX510 - This was the closest contender for me to the MS3. Liked shape and feel of mouse, removed weight to make it a little lighter and it tracked perfectly with right amount of sensitivity for me.
Logitech MX518 - Much the same as 510 with added DPI and adjustment, Happy with it but there was something I couldnt put my finger on which made me prefer the 510. I really cannot explain it, messed around with DPI to try to match the 510 but everynumber I tried it felt just a little off.
Razer Diamondback Plasma - Again tried this and at first I thougt I was going to love it, nice light weight and had a logitech kinda shape to it. Buttons nice and solid and it felt it was nicely put together and looked the part with a nice red glow (had the magma) Again though too sensitive and if lowered sensitivty ingame, wouldnt be able to track properly and do flick turns. No amount of tweaking helped, if I got 180 turn correct again would track too fast for me.
Logitech MX1000 laser - Shocking mouse for gaming, If you lifted mouse from mouse mat and layed it down again which I do a lot of in FPS it seemed to take a little while to register the movement again (only milliseconds but it was enough) Heavy and cumbersome it felt like going from a pair of trainers to wellies - Doesnt track properly and just felt all wrong for me. Sister liked it as a present though, it was either that or use it as a paperweight!
Id say if you have a nice big mousepad dont be fooled by higher and higher DPI thinking that its going to make you *more* accurate.
