Crysis was great. I bet the graphics are still pretty good nowadays, since it was a few years ahead of the hardware when it was released.
 
FEAR 1, the "original" one.

Don't know how no body has mentioned this yet, easily some of the best FPS gameplay I've experienced. If I could post some .webm's I would, they'd easily convince you :D

The only Far Cry I really enjoy is 2, though it's a really rough experience, but it just makes the best bits stand out more.

I might bet back into Cod 4 again with ProMod which still seems to be alive and kicking. Fun for some fast pace running' around and not really focusing on "realistic" shooting, people often say it's arcade-y.

STALKER mods are super simple to install if i remember correctly, mostly just an extract/ drag n' drop job. Makes a great game amazing imo.

I loved FEAR multiplayer. BFBC2 was also a huge time sink for me.

Before that Quake 3, AvP over dialup and to a limited extent UT'99.

I don't play games so much these days so I can't really compare. BF3 was dire though and I can't imagine BF4 is much better.
 
Fear single player was epic, one of the few FPS games I've played the entire story at least 5 times (The other was HL2).

Also BF4 is a great MP FPS, it's just not for everyone though, and the full spectrum warfare thing with large teams doesn't translate well to competitive gaming. Doesn't make it a bad game.
 
Soldier of Fortune series if you haven't played those yet.

But if you don't like limbs and gore in orders of magnitude, then probably not for you :p

I've been playing quite a lot of Mechwarrior Online recently. It's great fun, free to play and available on steam. Apart from that I've grown pretty tired of FPS games lately. I've played so many of them now that they all seem to be blurring into pretty much the same repetitive thing.

Half life was good in it's day but doesn't compare to FPS games nowadays for me. Farcry 3 was a very good game. The rest you mentioned I never liked. There are other great FPS games such as Unreal but like I say nothing comes close to BF4.

Anyway dirty bomb is not bad, plus its a free to play.
