Free one year subscription to Microsoft technet

they are trial keys?

NathanE or Burnsy, is this correct?

[edit]

That was a sneaky edit timko, I sought clarification for this nugget because you posted up that the key only lasts for 3-6 months.

This is imba. o.O

When Windows 7 comes out on retail, does this mean we get legitimate, free, lifetime keys?

They're trials. TechNet isn't about getting free Microsoft software. It's more about getting support direct from Microsoft.

See here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/bb892759.aspx

If you want proper access to MSDN Downloads then there are 3 ways:

1. If you're a student, sign up to DreamSpark.
2. If you're developing an application based on Microsoft technology, sign up to BizSpark.
3. Pay up about £1,000 (can't remember exact figure OTOH..) to get a MSDN subscription.

I am getting an error after the BUY button is clicked.

"An unknown error occurred while processing your request. This is most likely due to a connection failure. Please try again."

To me at the time it made sense that if MS are giving us TechNet for free then they won't also be giving us full MSDN like access for it (lifetime product usage etc). Hence the trial length only keys.

But then you came in with your query about trial length or not. I was then myself not 100% sure so I decided to remove my, reasonable, assumption. Turns out I didn't need to but sorry for catching you out :D :)

After a bit of googling I found this link

http://genxfinance.com/2009/04/28/c...us-subscription-to-keep-computing-costs-down/

which tells you more about it.
It does say that the software is for evaluation purposes but is not time or feature limited so this is actually full software, whether or not it's about getting free software from Microsoft is besides the point, it is what it is ... free and not time or feature limited :)

I've completed the registration and everything has worked fine. Got Vista, Office and XP off it.

The rumours floating around are that it's only a three month trial, which will lead up to Win7 launch, so I wouldn't be surprised if there's the opportunity to renew the Technet Plus subscription at a heavily discounted rate.

Holy jackpot, Batman!

What's the catch?

If I download some software + key and install it for the first time in 2011, will the keys still work?

Will the software need internet access to activate?

Yes having a good look at the EULA it seems the keys are lifelong keys. They are NOT trial keys as in they will NOT expire.
However, they are meant to be used as a trial purpose so think of it as a trial which does not expire and will always work.
If you use it for more than testing then well thats between you and microsoft
