From reading around the net it now seems like this was an epic mistake on Microsofts part. You are only supposed to get access if you are an invited member of a special program they are running and not a member of the great unwashed like ourselves. Apparently new signups have been stopped and those who have accounts should expect them to stop working in 24 hours time.
This sounds right as no way would they give away all this software as no business reason for it and no benefit for MS either.

Found some news that Microsoft know exactly what they're doing.

Microsoft, in a mysterious move, have offered anyone with a valid shipping address in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, a free TechNet Professional subscription.

My source is http://blogs.zdnet.com/igeneration/?p=1763

Also an article about it on neowin

http://www.neowin.net/news/software...ering-free-one-year-technet-plus-subscription

This has been offered to the 'great unwashed' as long as said unwashed has a valid shipping address, don't have to be an IT professional, don't have to be executives in big software companies, you just need a roof over your head and a door with a postbox :)

Why is everyone so surprised at this "mystery" move?!?

It's not like Microsoft haven't provided Technet trials before to the masses. They did the same in late 2006 through early 2007.

I knew I should have taken action when news first broke. :(

So... who wants to e-mail some spare keys? :D

looks like they've pulled it even for those that got accounts, I no longer have permission to vie license keys, good job i got them all in a text file then.

im gutted i found out just as the news leaked. but i was skeptical when going to apply.

i have couple of ex-corp laptop here that need os installed on them

Anyone else's transfer rates in the MS File Transfer Manager gone to poop or is it just me? It was happily maxing out my line about an hour ago and now it's around v90 dialup speeds :(

Edit Just paused one download and resumed a different one and now it's back to full speeds. Seems like certain files might be on "slower" servers :)

I just generated a key for home server about 10 mins ago so its still working to an extent.

they are probably going through steadily cancelling the accounts, they will probably kill the associated keys as well, we will have to wait and see.
