Anyone remember microsoft freelancer.

it was and still is one of my most favourite games, the single player story etc was great and i had lots of fun back in the day, such a shame they didnt make a prequel.

anyone play it? Best space game available :D

Only bettered by its predecessors' the Wing Commander/Privateer/ Strike Commander games. But maybe you're a bit young for those? ;)

Andi.

Yeh it was pretty good, filled the gap after the wing commander games, needed to be longer really.

Has'nt really been anything like it since.

As said, if you liked Freelancer then you could check out the wing commander series, although it probably looks incredibly dated and has a fairly linear (although it pretends not to be) storyline rather than Freelancer's open/linear storyline.

Wing Commander Prophecy and Secret Ops are the last in the line and probably the least dated looking, Secret Ops should be free to download.

darkstar one was a decent game that was total fan worship for freelancer.

there is also a mmo currently in beta, black prophecy that has similar gameplay.

I could'nt get into Darkstar One at all, it just did'nt feel right for me.

Jumpgate has been around for ages as well, another fine looking MMO.

Er... There was a prequel. Starlancer. Also good but more linear than Freelancer.

And to the person who mentioned strike commander, loved that game. Seriously needs a modern remake.

i used to play that, spent hours on that game with a cargo-ship thing transporting goods from one galaxy to another :D
the scale of this game was amazing, even if it was simply just lots of giant open-area maps :)

Was starlancer actually a prequel? iv heard of it and people said it was nothing like freelancer.

I've looked at a few games and even bought a few but couldnt get into them as much as i did with freelancer, hoping this black prophecy or jumpgate evolution will be good.

Dont have high hopes though :)

Watch the Freelancer intro. It quite clearly shows the colony ships from Starlancer leaving to create the new worlds in Freelancer.

So yes it was different as Starlancer was more like the Wing Commander games, very linear and just "go here, fight these dudes" missions wheras Freelancer has an element of free-roaming.

Wing Commander 4 - The Price of Freedom..... :D

Now THAT was one amazing game!

Blair, Maniac, Tolwyn - all legends in their own right!

Thinking about it.... does anyone know if this has been released as freeware nowadays? Anywa to get it working on Windows 7? Perhaps via XP mode?

One of my all time favourites. I never did manage to get the 'titan' though, but that gun I got from some system down the bottom end of the map was awesome. I'm not sure another game has absorbed me as completely as Freelancer did, but maybe that's just because I was like 12 or something at the time. Brings back good memories just thinking back to it... I always used to like to imagine that Trent and Juni went off together and had little space-faring children who would keep the trade lanes clear when their parents were busy :).

EDIT did the smileys just go Christmassy?

Privateer 2: The Darkening was my personal favourite of the genre. Loved the Icarus ship, and the enormous nuke/bomb that would clear out a system when things got too hairy! Been playing galaxy on fire 1 and 2 on my iphone for a fix of space-shooty goodness. Wish someone would make a good new one.

Starlancer has no mouse support so isn't ideal (appreciate some of you may be playing with sticks so not an issue).

One of my all time favourite games and the reason I got in to Eve Online.

Tried the X series, didn't get in to it.

There was another game around the same time called "Tachyon - The Fringe", I remember playing it but not for more than a few hours but it was quite good.

The space game I spent the most time playing was Frontier: Elite 2 on the Amiga. Spent ages looking for the imaginary mirage ship. Also managed to reach the galactic core with a Panther Clipper using a fuel scoop and a glitch that allowed you to jump absurd distances. What a game. Second to that was Tie Fighter. There are rumours that a remake in the vein of the Monkey Island Remakes is in the works too *crosses fingers*.
