Right, our crappy little fridge in the kitchen has a freezer compartment at the very top, the door broke on it about 10 years ago (hinge was hanging off so it didn't seal properly), and ever since then it has just been 1 huge block of ice, so today with a fire poker I smashed around the edges and it just slid out like a huge cube of ice and I took the door off completely.

Now... the fridge its self before that I was running with it on setting 4 the coldest and stuff was pretty cool but not cold cold.

Now I have removed the door on the freezer bit, in theory that will just keep the rest of the fridge colder now right? and also ill be able to turn the fridge settings down to 1 or 2 rather being on full, saving electric and being cold if not colder?

And if that theory works, well will the freezer box its self start freezing up again? or will it make food go funny or anything like that? because what im thinking is it wont freeze because the cold air is now cooling the whole fridge, but will it make all the fridge moist or something?

heres the fridge in question. (crap I know)!

Iv put a cola bottle at the top to see if it freezes etc and see what happens.

Haha! Great picture, reminds me of Communism.

Your fridge's overall temperature won't change much and the ice will form in the freezer even faster than before. It will also expand around the edges.

How so? If the door isn't on then it can't get to freezing temperature its just cooling the rest of the fridge is it not?

Is it not likely to overload the freezer cooling element because it's going to just run permenantly as it'll never get cold enough?

If the door didn't seal the freezer, the cooling mechanism was already working in "overdrive" because heat from the rest of the fridge was 'leaking' into the freezer, which meant it had to use more power to sustain the freezing temperatures.

So if the freezer was working full tilt before, its still running the same power the freezer but the fridge now iv turned it down is using less so overall it's using less now?

Surely the freezer unit is now trying to freeze the whole space now therefore as stated earlier using more power etc

Hmm. Well I guess I'll just have to keep a eye on the electric and see what's what. But if it was running full tilt before and cooling nothing etleast now it's cooling something. I don't like warm beer :p just filled the freezer area with cans

I had a similar setup a while back when I snapped the door off my freezer compartment whilst "tired and emotional" after a night out. I stuck the door back on with tape, but the seal wasn't the best and I noticed the freezer box would ice up in half the time it used to take with the door intact. I would open the door sometimes and my food would be trapped inside an iceberg and have to be chipped out with a pointy object. The ice would also sometimes start protruding through the edges of the badly fitting door.
Sometimes the motor would get so hot I was worried that it was going to burn my house down while I was at work.
So I got a new fridge.

Status report on the fridge,

Just opened a beer that has been in the top freezer section for 3 hours, and jeeeeeeeeeezus its cold, it must literally be on the edge of freezing point, absolutely chilled to perfection. there seems to be no icing over yet and its been 5 hours since I did it all. and the sides of the fridge don't seem hot to touch just warm. so I guess so far so good my idea is working the way I wanted it to

Okay plans failing, the whole fridge is cold, and now the bottle of coke at the top and inside my beer cans is slightly icing up. was a good idea though. will just tape the door back on and keep the cold in there, let another 20kg ice cube form.
