From 4770k to 2700x, does it even make sense?

The issue is I've never being bothered until I had the 1070 as it was always used at 99%, it's just now with the 2080 that I'm seeing around 80% in many games.

I just wonder if even with Ryzen (given I would be at similar speeds for similar IPC) I would see the same usage. Although I guess more cores would smooth things out.

If you've a 2080 then you'll not be gaming on 1080p (which is what that graph shows) 2080 isn't really a card for 1080p.

You're around the 1440p to get the most from the 2080 I'd say. At that resolution the difference in games is negligible. Main thing too is price. AMD just smash INTEL with performance for money.

see I'm trying not to pull the wallet out to replace my 3770k but for my needs a 2700x probably makes sense to. i do a fair bit of video encoding plus a few live streams here. and going from 4c/8t to 8c/16t i should notice a hell of change, would be nice to go intel again for the ipc but cant justify the prices intel want for the 9900k.

Get the 2700 and just overclock it. Save yourself even more money. 2700x will turbo a bit further but is it worth the extra 30-40 quid over the non x version?

1070 to 2080, but the upgrade was "necessary" as I had recently gone from 1440p/60Hz to 165Hz and wanted to experience recent releases in the best possible way(and had spare cash).

Nice my plan is a 670 to a 2080 so albeit overpriced by about 100, it was a long time coming

Part of me still regrets not ordering 2080ti but justifying spending 1.2k on a gpu is a bit much

Unfortunately given how expensive even used 1080ti are, there's no alternatives if you want a certain type of performance :/

From a 670 will be a ridicolous upgrade. I remember having one around the time the first Metro came out, eons ago :p

ive just pulled the trigger on the ryzen 2700X bundle. fingers crossed its an improvement on frames and smoothness.

Interested how you get on.

May I ask what speed are you running the 4790K at? I got one at 4.6/7 and thinking of a change.

I’m sure it will be awesome.

Yeah my only reluctance with ryzen is the lack of performance gain now over haswell and the fact that I think I’m unlikely to realistically replace a cpu I’ve paid 300 for.

I am super tempted by the 2700x tho.. I just feel in 3 years time it might show its age more than a 8 series high end cpu.

dead end unlike ryzen.

we'll see how i get on. if im not happy ill send it back.

Since both Intel and AMD are moving towards more cores/threads, I'd expect to see games starting to make better use of extra threads.

Have you seen the 1440p scores? Coffee lake is single digits over haswell.

To be honest I wouldn’t even consider running a pc game in 1080p. Such a waste.

To add to that, coffee lake is £450!!

I guess I'm finally bottlenecked: moving from a 1070 to a 2080 at 1440p/165Hz, I'm seeing Odyssey GPU usage between 75 and 95%.

Plus games like FFXV and Kingdom Come: Deliverance are a stutter fest while also displaying a similarly low GPU usage (but I believe - especially for Deliverance - the stutters are due to how buggy they are).

Would going from a 4770k @4.4 to a Ryzen @ 4.2 or whatever they get to, guarantee my 2080 will be utilised properly? While the answer might seem obvious, it isn't as much as I know my OC'd Haswell has almost the same IPC as a 2700x.
just have a look at the latest Digital Foundry video.... the guy says that on his pc with ryzen 1700 he is still bottlenecked in odyssey.... but i wouldn't blame the chip... its the game that is not well optimised

I want to share my mindset: I know this is a limited case scenario, but it's what usually stops me from jumping boat: If I'm spending 600£ to move from a 5 years old CPU, I don't want to ever see the new product performing worse than mine (My oc'ed Haswell is essentially a stock 4790k)...
Well, there's 7nm Zen2 coming in late winter.
I would wait for that.

And Intel seems to be back to their old dirty tricks now when there's actual competition to challenge them.
That's hardly behaviour which should be encouraged/rewarded.

as far as im aware have amd not said that any chip released until 2020 will still fit into the current socket ?? if true them you will get a decent upgrade without the need to change the mb
