Front LED lights on newer Audi's

It's argued that day running lights improve safety by making one's car more obvious on the road. Volvos have featured day running lights for years for example.

Why do they need "day running lights" during the day?

It's safer don't ya know. I mean, having 2 rows of bright leds on the car makes crashing impossible.

Or at least that would appear to be the attitude of 2 audi drivers I met last week on a wide section of the a75, overtaking 2 wagons meaning traffic was running 3 abreast.

I was always wondering what was up with those lights, I would hate to have them on my car though (not that I have one after having to scrap my Focus :().

They looked great on the R8 but now they've ruined it by putting them on every bloody model in the range. Agree with Fox, it's a failed attempt to copy the Angel Eyes.

Daytime running lights are in theory a good idea but only on dark/black cars which are less obvious in low light conditions.

I think having lights on all the time is a good idea, I keep my sidelights on most of the time. They do need to be discreet though, nothing is worse than people having they're dippers on at 4pm when its a bit cloudy and its just too bright.

People have been driving and observing other road users for 80 odd years without the use of day running lights.

Apparently drivers were risking their life for 80 years without knowing it. Every year over N/A lives are lost due to other road users not noticing cars without 1W led bulbs switched on. But fear not. It is about to change. Following the example of motoring power countries such as Hungary, Romania, Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia which require the use of full or reduced voltage low beam headlights at all times, all year round, and are already saving N/A lives annually, from 2011 the compulsory all year day running lights are being rolled across the continent and British Isles. All of those N/A lives a year will finally be saved. Coming as EU initiative to the stationary traffic near you.

LEDs are the car designers' new lime in a bottle of beer. If done right, they're ok. But slightly wrong, and they look like a pile of poo.

I think they are an excellent idea. When the sun is low probably less than 10% of people stick their lights on despite visibility being very poor. Cars easily get lost in the glare of the sun and having lights on improves their visibility no end.

The LEDs on the recent Audis are plenty bright enough to help in this situation.

Same can be said to a lesser extent in the rain where not enough people have their lights on.

And for the first 80 odd years of driving people got by fine without airbags and side impact protection systems. Most accidents happen in "half" light, often people won't turn their side/head lights on at this time of day, so having always-on DRLs makes the car more visible.

If they *really* bother you that much they can be turned off quite easily.

I find the LEDs distracting, but quite like BMW angel eyes.

I think that having some lights on during the day is actually a good idea, easier to judge speed/distance and provide a slightly more awareness.
