Fuel up/down again

whilst I fill up with Super rather than 'normal' unleaded, I noticed normal was 128.9 at my local Sainsburys yesterday. First time I've seen unleaded fuel starting £1.2*.9 in what feels like years.

Whats the cheapest price everyone else seems to see fuel at these days?

Around here is about 129ppl at the supermarket.

My petrol prices email alert came through the other day and the cheapest station within 5 miles of me was Sainsburys in Chafford Hundred in Essex at 126.9ppl. Unfortunately, although the station is within 5 miles as the crow flies, it's also on the other side of the Thames so it's not one I ever visit.

Totally different market and lifestyle, you can't simply say that X is cheaper than Y, you need to include cost of living and various other factors too.

Fuel in Australia is currently around $1.49 a litre for petrol, which is slightly cheaper than the UK at the current exchange rate, go back a decade and that would have been crazy cheap due to the weak AUD compared to the GBP at the time. In terms of living costs fuel is a lot cheaper than the UK, but the trade off is you have to travel more distance to get somewhere...

Very true, I hate the fact most places have to be driven to. Also I fill up with 87 RON here but 95 RON in the UK.

What would make sense is if they scrapped Road Tax and made up for it by raising fuel tax. That way the more fuel you use (whether it's by driving more miles or doing worse MPG) would mean the more tax you pay.
They did that over here about 5 years ago.scrapped road tax and adde somewhere between 17p to 20p extra per litre

They 100% made sure they make more money by doing it this way by how much extra they put on the fuel..

Dunno if this has been mentioned here. Shamelessly ripped from moneysaving...

Morrisons: Free tank of petrol? Big spenders’ extreme couponing

This is an awesome bit of extreme couponing. It’s fiddly and only works if you’re already planning to make a big purchase at certain high street stores, such as PC World, Homebase or Currys. But play it to the max and you could potentially get a free tank of petrol. Plus it's now added new retailers, so you've more choice.

How it works

Morrisons' Fuel Saver deal gives 1p/litre off petrol, diesel or LPG for every £10 of gift cards bought in-store.

There are 38 retailers to buy gift cards for, including Homebase, Debenhams, Currys, PC World, Next, House of Fraser, Halfords, and iTunes, plus new retailers TK Maxx, Oasis, Warehouse and Waterstones. The offer's ongoing, but doesn't include Morrisons' own gift cards.

The discount's also stackable, so you can buy £50 of gift cards and get 5p/litre off. So if there's a large purchase you are going to make anyway - eg, £500 on a computer at PC World or a garden shed at Homebase - get it by first buying the gift cards and you'll bag 50p/litre off.

If you bought £1,400 of gift cards, it'd effectively make a £1.40/litre tank FREE. Morrisons has also told us there's no limit per transaction on the gift cards, and you can split any amount above this into a second purchase to get a voucher for a second fill up. Petrol vouchers are valid for 63 days from the issue date.

Use gift cards quickly

Gift cards are non-refundable, and it isn't a good idea to put money on the card to drip-spend over six months. Though most of those mentioned here are big, safe companies, if the firm goes bust you'll probably lose the cash, so ensure you minimise the time between buying and redemption.

It's also worth noting third party retailers (Morrisons in this case) don't have any responsibility to refund you if a gift card's retailer goes into administration. See the Beware gift vouchers MSE News story. Gift cards are generally valid for about two years, but always check.

Full terms on the Morrisons website. Find your nearest Morrisons.

So basically, spend 1400 quid get a free tank of fuel worth 80 quid. Barely 5%. It amazes me anyone would bother with the faff for that let alone write a news article on it. You would save more than that by not buying your 1400 quid item on the high street anyway.

Noticed over the last few days my local shell garage has crept its pricing up from 133.9 to 138.9 for regular unleaded. In fact one day coming home from work it was 135.9, then it was 136.9 when i went to work in the morning, then 138.9 when i came back. Is oil going up again quite quickly or what?

. Is oil going up again quite quickly or what?

Yup, it's almost at $120 now.

Basically every time 'good news' about the world economy comes out, market speculators buy loads of crude futures contracts so they can resell them at a profit.

Which ends up pushing the price up and invariably ends up ruining whatever 'good news' was coming out about the world economy anyway.

Plus the worse our economy does - not helped by higher oil prices - the lower the value of sterling, which increases fuel price for us even more. Good isn't it?

You are easily amazed.

*Does shadow puppets*

Local Shell is up another penny yesterday. Ten days ago it was 131.9, now its 134.9 for regular. Although I've started using VPower as I seem to get more per tank. Nearly 360 miles this time and that was with a 45 minute 'exploration of the full rev range' the day after I filled up.

360 miles compared to what? I'm intrigued to know whether Vpower actually yields real world results, or whether people just seek results to affirm their more expensive purchase.

I'm not saying Vpower isn't better than standard fuel, because it is...just whether the price is justified!

Sorry lol doesn't mean anything unless I put the prior mileage.

I used to get about 330 to 340 miles from a tank so I was surprised when I hit 360 even though I was giving it a good thrashing dor the first 50 miles or so. We'll see what I get for this tank.
