Fuji X Series

I do like the 18-55 as a general walk about lens, but personally I prefer using primes. Not only due to the better quality but also it forces more creative photos. When I had the zoom lens I quite often found myself being lazy and just saying put and zooming in rather than getting physically closer and finding new and interesting compositions.

Both are good lenses with the 18-55 being a particular favourite due to its small size and reasonable price (used anyway). However, personally I would go for the extra versatility of the 16-80 which I have found to be an excellent lens given the range it covers. I believe my copy to be very good however regardless of copy variation it does get soft at 80mm but still perfectly usable if needs be.
I would then add an f2 prime, either 23, 35 or 50 for those occasions when pin sharpness is a must.

Looking at selling all my dslr stuff and getting a xt4 with the 16-80 kit lens . Any do or do nots or votes for the 18-55 before i buy ?

Currently have both. I picked up an x-s10 with 16-80 and have an older x-e2 with 18-55 kit lens. Tbh I'm not sure which one to keep as they both have their pro's and con's.

18-55 - nice size, similar to other primes. Can be easier to share filters with other lenses. Decent performance
16-85 - WR which matches the x-t4 body. Slightly better IS. More range. Bigger and heavier. Extremes aren't the best i.e. 16-20mm the corners are a bit soft, then out near 80mm again gets a bit soft. Larger filter thread size if you want to share filters with other lenses

It's just a bit annoying it's bigger and heavier to go in to a small camera bag. It probably depends on the price difference which one you go for.

Still all prime on my Fuji, still on X-T1 !

I enjoy my primes a lot but I’d also be lost without my zooms.
I just wish Fuji would release a wide angle prime like a 12mm. I know third party ones do exist but I’ve bought and sold the Samyang which is great value for money but I just know Fuji could make one so much better.

Ooh! Welcome to the club, better late than never :D.
I was initially apprehensive about selling my 55-200 to help fund this (along with the 1.4x TC) but I’m so glad I did now.

For such a large lens I find it balances surprisingly nicely on the X-S10.

I really like the 55-200 but how does that compare?
I really liked my 55-200 as well. At the time it pained me to sell it but having got my 70-300 I'm happy with the trade.
I've found the 70-300 to be every bit as sharp and beyond the 150mm mark it's considerably sharper than the 55-200 and sharp right up to 300mm.

I appreciate it may not suit some people as it's slightly slower than the 55-200 but for me the extra range was the real selling point plus since I also own the 16-80 I wasn't losing anything on the shorter end. I also have the 90mm f2 which covers off the 'fast telephoto' aspect for me.

Lucky man, 16‐80 and 70-300 is a great combo.
The 70-300 has a reassuring weight without being too heavy, and you are right about the balance, feels great. I can't wait to take it out for a proper outing.

well the xt4 arrived.. went with the 16-80 .. dam i am blown away how much better it is than my canon . really impressed with how it handles.. the *****.. super happy and cant wait to get to grips with it

Has anyone had experiene of using both the 23mm F2 and the F1.4?

Mainly wondering if there's any noticeable difference in the bokeh between the two.

The 56mm 1.2 I bought a few weeks - optically it is absolutely incredible. I am however finding the focus to be quite tempremental. At the wedding doing portraits of the bridge and groom was fine but trying to snap anything moving even slightly (as in people just socialising, laughing) I had to overshoot to ensure I'd get at least one useable image. I'm not convinced I'll end up using this lens much to be honest although it's nice to know you have a master of a portrait lens in the arsenal. The 50mm 1.0 is much better apparently but too expensive to justify the use I'd get out of it.

I sold all my Nikon kit to invest in a XT-3, 35mm 1.4 and a Samyang 12mm. I was also extremely impressed. To me the quality difference was exponential. I find the Fuji more of a challenge to use, but the final result seems more "alive".

Very nice. How do you find the IS on that 70-300? Mine is a godsend on the 55-200 tbh, I miss not having it on the XT-3.
I’ve found the IS to be very good. I can shoot at 300mm + 1.4x TC as low as 1/60 and get consistently reliable results. Can shoot at 1/30 as well although that’s more of a spray and pray but I’d say I get a solid 50% success rate.
