Fuji X Series

Check the DPD tracking, says delivery Monday for my new camera so I decide to go out, come back an hour later to see a `we missed you card’ :D typical!

picked up a second hand XF27mm, really like the compact nature with the XT-20, Lens seems nice and sharp, this is going to be my minimal chuck in a coat setup when out about about.

Not sure I could live without the aperture ring on the older 27mm.

In other news, I love Acros simulation so much.

X100V is pretty discrete.

So at the wedding the 16mm 1.4 was fantastic... when I was using it.

I made the fatal mistake of giving my X-T20 to other guests in portrait mode to snap photos including myself. Now why oh why did someone at Fujifilm think it would be a good idea to let the camera use a 1/60 shutter in a portrait setting!? It used f/4 which I'm fine with to keep things sharp but 1/60 is useless. This has really annoyed me, that is not fast enough to snap a statue without blur. So ended up with some crucial photos of us all with the groom most of which are blurred and unusable. The whole point of auto mode is the camera just delivers. What's even more frustrating is if you come out of full auto mode but use the custom settings and shoot in aperture priority, there is a section in the menus where you can set a minimum shutter BUT IT STILL ignores that and uses 1/60 if the scene isn't light enough. I would much rather have completely underexposed photos so I can notice as I'm taking them and quickly crank up the ISO than have the camera use that shutter speed where it is difficult to see how blurred the photos actually are until you zoom right in/are in POST.

I've since noticed that 'party' mode seems to use a minimum of 1/300 but then the aperture goes wide open so you risk losing sharpness if the image isn't focused properly. Basically I'm never using fully auto mode again even when I hand it to others and IMO the main portrait mode should never under any circumstances whatsoever go below 1/100 let alone 1/60.

/Rant

Also it may be me being the idiot here as I've invested a lot of time learning to use the camera in manual but surely a fully auto setting should be 'idiot proof' and not deliver these unacceptable results.

1/60th should be plenty fast enough for portraits, ideally I would want to shoot faster, but if you can't take a sharp image at 1/60th, it might be you, not the camera.

Also, why buy an 'enthusiast' camera and use full auto? Might as well have bought a crappy point and shoot.

I totally get what you mean about the minimum shutter speed. I regularly use that when shooting sports and as soon as the camera detects one of the other parameters is being pushed it automatically decreases shutter speed which can be very annoying indeed.
As has been mentioned above 1/60 should be plenty fast for a 16mm shot however much of that will come down to the operator so if the third party who was taking the shots was taking no action to address camera shake at all then yes shots will be blurry - people are too used to the IS in smartphones these days.
For future, as you touched on, don't be afraid to boost the ISO on these Fuji cameras. For me the result is practically indiscernible up to 1600 and perfectly usable up to 3200.

1/60th at 16mm! That's even worse!! (as in even easier to get sharp photos)

Set up the auto min shutter speed (assuming the X-T20 has this feature). That way the camera will never go slower than your minimum selected shutter speed.

AND DON'T SHOOT IN AUTO!

Actually it will still override the shutter speed in auto ISO mode. Only if the exposure is way out though.

Also Barks didn’t take the photos, he let some wedding guests do it.

Yes, but if you set it up sensibly, then it never will (assuming you use a suitable aperture for the shooting conditions too).

Oh I agree, it just sounded like you thought Barks took the photos with those settings.

Personally, indoors at weddings during the evening I go 1/125, ISO3200 and wide open. But even with those settings a guest who has no idea about cameras would probably miss focus or not hold the camera steady.

Yep my results in manual were fantastic.

Handing to guests to take snaps of me in fully automatic mode were awful.

Then was just making the point in manual mode with auto shutter/aperture priority it still messes around even if you input a minimum shutter speed in the menu

The reason I’m annoyed is that one of the reasons I bought the 16 was to have an all purpose lens that can sit on the camera, be passed around and just reliably capture shots at parties and family events (ie not when I’m not doing what I’d describe as photography). I feel way more comfortable now just using my iPhone 12 Pro Max, the images might be inferior but I can count on them being sharp and in focus.

Finally got my X-S10 and 23mm f2 this morning, when I switch the camera on, I can hear a motor running without a lens attached, any idea what that is? Don’t remember my X-T3/4 doing that.

How loud are you talking? Both my X-T3 and X-S10 make some noise with or without a lens although the X-S10 is notably louder when both are held close.
It's not the IBIS as it still makes the noise when it is off.
It doesn't sound like a motor as such to me, just the internals of the camera doing their thing.

Not loud loud, I have to put my ear right against the camera to hear it, was just trying to figure out what was going on :p

:p can’t hear it when it’s at normal arms length so all good. :)

Just taking a few pictures around the house and the 23mm f2 is razor sharp, can’t believe how good of a Lens it is, weighs about the same as a kitkat too. :D

I’d love to have the 23 f2 to add to my collection of native Fuji primes but my Viltrox has never let me down plus I’d be losing a stop by doing so. If the quality (both build and image) is comparable to the 50mm f2 which I do have then it’s an excellent lens.
