Full stop in word

My "proof" is how I've been taught through various institutions.

Maybe I just paid attention during my education and you didn't?

Which one of these educators was such an incontrovertible source of grammatical authority that their views are universally correct?

Like lots of things in language, this is in a state of flux and there's no one 'correct' answer. The OP still has to abide by the rules of his particular institution, though. There's no universally 'correct' side of the road to drive on, but you still have to drive on the left in Britain.

Going back to high school where I learned touch typing (not that I would admit that to anyone face to face!) I was always tought two spaces after a full stop.

Then when I did NVQ's, many years ago, again I was taught two spaces after a full stop.

I don't know why, nor do I care to be honest, but to me it just looks right.

I think it may be down to an age thing as well? I'm 30 and was taught to use double spaces. However, according to wikipedia, it's not usually accepted in academic usage these days.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Full_stop
"Double space (American Typewriter Spacing). The two spaces convention was brought about by the use of monospaced font on typewriters to approximate an em space, and carried on by tradition. However, this more closely approximates traditional typography, as even in proportional fonts an inter-word space is nearly always much narrower than an em space. This convention is typically not accepted in modern academic usage."

Heres a sneaky little trick to make it seem longer. If your text is size 10 search every fullstop and set it to replace it with size 12 fullstop. Its unnoticable and adds prob 1 page for every 10 ;)

Its a bit dishonest but its helped pad stuff out in the past lol

haha, I don't need to pad out, I need to cut out about 5000 words :(

When I did my dissertation (painful memories) a few years back it was stated to use two spaces, but whatever you do make sure you do what it says in the instructions you were given.

Except two spaces is correct, and one is wrong.

But yes, believe what you like if it helps.

And where was your "proof" that it is personal preference?

Glad you were proven wrong and the matter was settled - perhaps it is you that should have paid better attention during your education? :p

Strange that you didn't show your face in this thread once it was clear you were wrong. If you're ever that cocky about being right, and are then shown to be incorrect - the least you could do is apologise for your arrogance!
