A 182 with trick suspension? It's just an evolution of an already good car - yes it was great, yes the trick suspension made a huge difference but will it make it a classic?

Thats what i think will make it a classic, it ticks more of the classic boxes.

Be rare (Exclusivity)

Have design or engineering significance

Probably not. Just becuase they didnt make many doesnt make it a future classic. There are only 10 Mondeo RSi's - will never be a classic, will simply fade away.
I disagree. The Trophy will just be the more sought-after model, with prices reflecting it. As with other limited edition models of classics.

F40 LM..? :D

My point about electronics earlier is that anybody off the street with a handful of tools, a Haynes manual and a little bit of easily-learnable knowledge can keep my car on the road. The same goes for Jonny's car and just about everything of a similar vintage.

Try doing that with a Focus.

Big difference is that the Focus has a high chance of doing at least 120,000 miles before you even need to think about problems, whereas the old stuff requires quite a lot more attention..

Besides, Focus isn't exactly the most complex of cars, the Zetec certainly seems popular with beardy kitcar owners.

Its called progress :p cars are way more reliable than they used to be.

Clio will never be a classic for the reason Fox mentioned, its a good car but not that desirable imo, you dont get kids with pictures with them on the wall. Its on the too own list of many and its affordable so they will own one, one day.

The days of Hot Hatches becoming future classics are slowly dissapearing, although the Clio is arguably the best out there, its just being the best. It isnt bring anything new to the hot hatch format its just leading it. The cars of tomorrow will be better than it and those of the golden age of hot hatches will still be the top of the classics list.

The Lupo GTi is more likely to be a classic than the new Golf.

It's perfectly possible for a 30-year-old car to run to well over 100k with normal servicing.

Go to a Volvo, bimmer or pre-being-crap Mercedes and you can expect to at least double that.

Escort - other than terminal rot to the strut tops, the mechanicals will pass 100k with ease.

Vauxhall - similar but with a lot less rot.

Rootes - slightly fragile, hit and miss with rot.

You say that as if its some sort of acheivment - it's not. Most properly built modern cars will do more than that.

If I could be bothered to keep it for a decade I'm sure my Mondeo would tick over 200k, plenty on MEG that already have. And guess what, all the known problems with them are things that can be fixed by a bloke with a spanner.

I even look after mine myself.

The Escort is a legend :D

With the Vauxhall your getting into Trigger's broom territory though :p

This old broom's had seventeen new heads and fourteen new handles in its time, but it's the only broom i've ever had

M3 ;)

seriously though Ms are special from the day they are made, my only concern with the e36 M3 is that it is like the middle child, the first born is always very special and the youngest is all new and exciting, the poor middle sibbling gets forgotten about :(

Personnally the e36 M3 has the best balance of technology without being overly controlled. Lots of power no ASC+T etc

e28 BMW M5, the best "Wolf in Sheeps Clothing" you could wish for, especially the de-badged models.

Otherwise, the Sierra RS Cosworth 3dr, e30 M3 ,Porsche 911 and, the Lada Riva. :p

I agree with the Fiat Coupe. I can also see the Alfa GTV, Spider and GT being strong, they're beautiful cars and I have a sad feeling the Alfa marque won't be here in 20 (or even 10 :( ) years time. Alfa 75s (the last RWD Alfa) are now worth more then a 3 series the same age, and have probably bottomeed value wise.

Renault Avant Time, very scarce, will probably only be 4 left in 20 years time.

Crystler's PT cruiser is a very cool car (imo) and much rarer then the beetle (plus it's not horrible) I can see people loving these for years to come.

Citroen Xantia, C5 and (especialy) XM. Air suspension makes thse cars very different, as does the XM and Xantia's sharp wedge shape. With car makers having to share more parts I can see PAS moving larger Citroens to springs, making these the last of the line.

see the E36 M3 had too many versions and I agree - it won't be a classic.

the DC2 ITR will be i think

Yes it is! Its nastynastynasty.

if the PT cruzer becomes a classic I will happily eat my hat, or any other item of clothing, It is a horrible car, in every way, and the looks are the worst bit I dont think I could say anything good about it.

Agree with the DC2's and clio trophy comments.

Porsche designers must rate pretty highly in the amount paid>work done scale.

The NEW 911...Er...We changed the lights back to how they were..and...er...
