FX 8120

Well I did a little more digging around and there is a lot of talk of my motherboard suffering from Vdroop with overclocks and there are no LLC controls to correct it, im on the latest bios so its not like its been added at a later date to fix the problem.

Here is a 4.2ghz Overclock at idle with 1.475v (in the bios):

Then at load, take note of the Vcore:

So basically the vdroop is knocking the vcore so low that it causes instability hence why im having to use such high voltages to compensate.

that is a shame, seems its definitely the board that letting you down......the CPU has so much more to give.
my last board & current have both been asus and they have/are rock solid.
check this out asus-crosshair-v-formula-amd-fx-bulldozer-overclocking-guide/

 no

i think u got the wrong person

i had a good clocker chip, did 4.5ghz with 1.25v~ stable

but i sent it back after a day~ because it performed crap

I find much the same, 4.5 at modest volts and then a very large increase to get stable at 4.6

I seriously considered sending mine back as well.
Did get an RMA number but in the end i kept it.
I only use it rarely and that is for comparison benchmarks of Handbrade and the like.
I like that i can fire it up now and again for comparisons and then put it away again in it's nice tin, maybe it will actually increase in value as a curio.

The Sabretooth is a very nice MB and provides a good home for the 1090T.

yeah, I don't think ill go gigabyte with my next mobo. Its a bit of a pain in the ass really that this is happening, I can keep my fingers crossed that some sort of LLC control will come in a future bios update since they stuck it in the UD7 bios. Gigabyte claim they have the current vdroop to "protect" consumers from damaging their FX chips.....

At the moment ASUS is the only sensible choice.
If you want good clocks on your BD get a Sabretooth.
If you feel like splashing out more then the CHV is excellent also.

I love my Sabretooth - (only paid £175 6 months ago on MM for 1055T + the board)
absolute bargain. My 1055T currently sits at 4ghz with 1.5v.

I'm hoping the next iteration of BD will be better and AMD will pull a rabbit out of the hat.

aye, heard good things about Sabretooth boards, tempted to pick one up for more than one PCI-E slot to be honest but then there are lots of good boards around, some of them priced really well. shame there aren't any Micro-ATX boards with SLI/Crossfire support that I have seen. :(

Well, i crumbled and ordered a Asus CHV which is getting delivered tomorrow. So ill be reaching those higher clocks in no time hopefully. I checked out the Sabertooth but it was actually cheaper than my Gigabyte UD5 so i felt the need to go up in price rather than down, plus the amount of fan headers on the CH V had me sold as I really need them as the 650D fan controller is terrible.

Cheers for all the help and suggestions, its much appreciated. I'll probally post how i get on with the new board.

Well the Asus CH V has been installed and my cpu is clocked to 4.2Ghz and previously my GPU usage run through of "Fear No Evil" on Ultra in the BF3 single player campaign looked like this:

Clearly visable bottlenecking, where as now it looks like this:

Bottleneck pretty much removed

Cheers for all the help guys, it produced great results.

Glad it has made a difference, i suggest once you find your highest stable multi overclock.....drop it back down and do some FSB overclocking then combine the two to give even better results.

It'll be like how when intel first brought out new architecture (can't remember for which one exactly) it was fairly bad and took time to "mature". Give it some time, the next gen will be better i hope that's if AMD continue to make them at the enthusiast level.

Netburst, though it was getting better they thankfully abandoned it lol. The bulldozer ain't a bad cpu but its just outclassed by Intels offerings. Had they continued down the netburst path and never gotten the core architecture it would probably be king of the hill.
