The fabrication plant costs millions and millions to build. The vast majority of wafers don't pass quality tests so are either dumped or sold as cheaper versions

my X2 3800 does them speeds (minus the extra cache of course) on 1.45v and cost a hell of a lot less.

For Phnom_Penh, basically they charge so much because research and development isn't free, they recoup that outlay over the life of the processor/socket. And the best is never cheap.

Wonder what they will clock to, I think the game benchmarks will be disappointing as it may only be as quick as an fx57 at the same clock speed.

Well over priced IMO.. AMD used to pride themselves on producing cheaper processor than any of it's competitors. Their increase of popularity has obvouosly gone to their heads.
I guess it's paying for the R&D more than anything.
