Gainward bring you a 512MB 7800 GT for AGP!!!!

If your keeping that same CPU, it is debatable whether you will see much of a performance gain as you could, as these GPU's are heavily CPU limited, even on a P3.2 its limiting itself.

For the prices of AGP-board CPU's, it would be worth upgrading to the highest you can get to, otherwise you face to be disappointed with the results, apart from more special effects of course ;)

I was a bit curious about these GS+ cards. I have one myself, and wondered about this power connector. It has a PCI-e to 2 x molex adaptor. Does it matter if you plug 1 molex in as opposed to plugging in both the molex's together?

For some reason my IT guy only plugged the 1 molex in, what does that mean for my AGP card, does it mean it wont be working at full capacity when I need it to?

He seems to know hes stuff from the things he does, but I dont think he is very good in terms of knowing what the graphics cards require. I think its because my Tagan has 1 special molex especially for the VGA, but I will have to go home and find a spare molex to plug it into. I dont suppose that it matters what spare molex I plug it into?

If your PSU has a dedicated 6-PIN PCI-E connector then use that

If it's got molex connectors marked as VGA then I'd recommend using these. Otherwise I'd use a set of molex connectors that are not used for anything else

hi,

i've got a chance to get a Gainward 7800GS+ 512MB for £248.98 with postage, is it worth it?

and also does anybody have any links to reviews of the Gainward 7800GS+ 512MB?

thanks.

Due to the age of my machine it would have to be the molex connectors. I have 1 marked VGA which 1 is plugged into, but where to plug in the other one? Does it matter which molex I plug it into? will any of them supply the 12V that it needs for the other molex?

Hi

Welcome to the forums :)

Have a look at reviews for the 7900GT on PCI-Express. The Gainward card will be a little slower, but not hugely (due to the bridge chip and the AGP interface)

As for whether it's worth it, that's a good price and it's a good card. If you do not want the hassle of upgrading to PCI-E or if you're on a system where it's impossible to do this (Socket A) then it's definitely worth considering.

If you can upgrade to PCI-E, I'd get a PCI-E 7900GT or X1800XT and a PCI-E motherboard

Would only plugging 1 molex cause these pixellated images I experience? It seems to mainly be with images such as the OcUK banner and the person figures by each posters names. I did think it might be broken, but after OcUK testing it they said it was perfectly fine so im at a loss really.

There is a good review of the slightly slower Gainward 7800GS 512MB card here and as you can see from the benchmarks, this card actually beats the 7900GT PCI-E card in some tests, so the + version should be even better.

thanks for advice, i definitely will get one. hopefully it should last me a year and a half+. by then vista should be out and new gen cards and the bugs should be sorted out. then i can do a proper full upgrade.

Exactly the reason I bought one! However, there can be a lot of issues with this range of cards. I have found pixellation on mine, but with OcUK testing & saying its fine on there test machine, I can only seem to assume its something to do with other components causing the issues.

i only want the new card to be able to plat cs:s, quake 4 and fear in full details in 1280x1024, my current ati 9800pro cant handle it. cs:s is playable but it lags a bit when too much detail on screen.

i wont get any lag, or will i? in games such as fear and cs?

CS, definitely not. I get over 80fps on the Source test with everything maxxed out on my X800Pro, somewhat slower than the 7900GT!

FEAR, if you max it out with soft shadows you might get a little stutter. It all depends on what you feel is a playable framerate - FEAR is very demanding!

the price of the 7800gs+ has gone down to £237 (with my discount voucher), i've just ordered it before the price goes up again.

i've been waiting for the x850 xt pe agp to become cheapers but the damn thing wont budge below £240 and this 7800gs+ is a steal compared to that.
