GAME - Gamestation, about to fold?

That's what I assumed they meant in your post, but looking at a news story they've cancelled all the pre orders. The special edition and now standard too.

You can expect more of that then this is what it says at the bottom of the article.

GAME is currently working with publishers on a title-by-title basis following its loss of credit insurance with the banks last month.

That policy is really going to hurt them going forward.

This is the statement from game regarding it

Game said:
A GAME spokesperson said: "There is a lot activity going on in our stores and online this weekend including the releases of Syndicate: Executive Edition, Jak & Daxter Collection, Zumba Fitness Rush, Binary Domain, and Fallout New Vegas: Ultimate Edition.

"The Last Story, for the Wii, is not in stock and we have apologised to any customers this has affected."

Yeah cos there's some real big sellers in that lot!

Get the impression Games spokesperson is this fella.

If they start pulling this trick and cancelling peoples orders a day before release because they can't afford to buy the games then they're going to lose even more customers.

They might as well be a game version of cash converters now cos pre owned seems to be about all they will have in stock soon!

And then if you consider that the next generation consoles are going to use the one use game codes like PC games do to tie the game to your gamertag meaning you can no longer buy second hand games and Game will be in a lot of trouble as the second hand market wont exist for consoles lol

They had my preorderd 3G vita and 16gig mem card on Wednesday afternoon, also had uncharted and FIFA which I hadn't preorderd, was worried I'd get nothing from there with all the doom n gloom news

Will be a shame if game goes, they already closed the game station a little while back which was 20 secs round the corner. Don't wanna be restricted to only asda or traveling when I've been used to having 2 gaming shops 5 mins away most of my gaming life :(

I cant wait for them to shut down - takes epically poor management to kill off one of the main high street players when it comes to entertainment. Just avoid pricing yourself out of the market and all the dodgy dealings when it came to preowned etc would have sufficed.

Just realised I may still have an active extended warranty for my PS3 that I got from Gamestation - better check to see if thats worth anything post fold :p...

ps3ud0

I'm personally stunned that they haven't closed more than 35 stores (by Xmas 2013???) to bring them to a total of 550 stores in the UK. I just don't see how this company won't enter administration this year.

agreed

considering the number of people who have commented that their local highstreet has both a game and a gamestation in the immediate vicinity, and places like meadowhall with ludicrously expensive rent having 3 (YES 3 !!) stores, they need to half their number of stores, not get rid of only 35.

What I don't understand is how they can be doing so badly, Shopto reported profit increases of 245%, yes they don't run retail stores, but then Shopto are massively cheaper than the GAME group most of the time, so to still be making massive profits on cheaper prices means GAME should be making huge profits on the prices they charge.

What's mad about it? They're saying they will buy as many as they need for Pre Orders and no more.

When I went in to GAME to buy a copy of Catherine on release day (which they had a huge section devoted to) I was told I couldnt because they only had enough stock to fulfil pre-orders and that was their plan with most future releases.

I was told I could come back the next day and ask the manager for an uncollected copy. Instead I ordered from Shopto for £4 less and it turned up before I had got out of bed.

you really under estimate how many overheads that many stores and that many staff will put on the business.

Plus its not just the stores, its all the distribution and head office network behind it all. The sort of stores they have in meadowhall are 200,000 a year in rent, and they have 3 of them, plus all the staff that work in them.

Shopto buy their stock from cheap distributors in Europe (saving money) and have it delivered to a single warehouse in the UK (saving money). This warehouse enjoys a lot of automation (saving money), from here they distribute to their customers.

Game buys it stock from UK distributors and has it delivered to a warehouse, they then have to pay to ship the stock from their warehouses to their 500+ UK stores. Each of these stores employs several staff (maybe 10 per store?), and they have to pay rent on each store they have.

Once you add up all these costs GAME have significantly higher costs per unit than Shopto and need to charge more to cover them (hence the higher prices).

To make up for higher unit costs GAME only stock new releases that they know will sell, which makes the shop useless for anyone other than the casual gamer walking past on their lunch break, hardcore gamers are likely to have preordered elsewhere to save money and get the game early and a lot of casual people will go to a supermarket for a big release where it is cheaper.

GAME make their money from trade ins which they receive to each individual store and as far as I am aware don't ship anywhere, so the unit cost is much less. They do run the risk of being left with a number of titles traded in that people do not want to buy, but usually they reflect this risk with the trade in price.

Sadly the big sellers in the preowned market, FIFA etc, now need online codes, which once used make the preowned game no cheaper than the new copy. For a lot of gamers there is now no incentive to buy a preowned title unless it is not online based (ruling out most of the games popular with the casual market). GAMEs income from this sector will have been falling.

Ditto on this

I've never even heard of The Last Story, so it's clearly not that big. With their current cash situation they aren't going to buy stock of games they can't shift.

Also, whether you shop at Game or not, it closeing does nobody any favours. For the customer it means less competition in the market. For the Publishers it's also a real issue as Game is a huge retailer and it effects them when these smaller titles aren't getting to the shelves.
