US: Game of Thrones - Season 3 - Book Comparison (Spoilers)

This is the main argument that people use for dismissing Benjen as a possibility for Coldhands, but personally, I don't think it rules him out. One of the Children of the Forest says to Bran something like "They killed him(Coldhands) long ago" and Benjen has only been missing for a few years.

I don't understand. You've said you don't think it rules him out, then quoted the children of the forest saying they killed him long ago, and then pointed out that Benjen hasn't been missing for all that long.

Yeah, I suppose that is confusing reading it back...I didn't really want to get in to it tbh:p...basically, I think that whilst that quote does indicate that Coldhands died long ago, it is said by a COTF, who are, for all we know, practically immortal. How many works of fiction have you read/seen where beings with long lifespans have a different perspective of time, or experience time differently?...We don't know what 'long ago' means to them is really what I am saying, and based on that, Benjen can't be ruled out imo.

Whilst I don't necessarily think that Coldhands is Benjen, I don't think that the COTF saying that completely rules him out, as many do. Benjen=Coldhands is still a possibility in my mind. Personally though, I like the idea of it being the original Night's King.

I think the issue with that is those that see timespans differently due to living such a long time is that our lifetimes appear to be transient and gone in no time, so a handful of years max that Benjen has been missing for would rule out him being Coldhands IMO.

I only have one wish for the last episode, but I highly doubt it will happen, as they seem to be downplaying the Direwolves somewhat in general- That Nymeria is seen pulling Catelyn out of the river!

PS. Rewatched it, and at the wedding I just saw a fat guy with a Merman brooch:)

I think some of the downplaying is due to GFX costing, and to keep things looking real, so wolves were seen pouncing in the Jon Snow scene where it was necessary and unavoidable, the other wolf, Greywind was just shot, as he was going to end up dead anyway, so rather than waste money on GFX for a fight that was never going to be won, and the amount of dead frays didn't matter either, they skipped it, had him shot, minimised the bill.

The amount of dead freys don't matter?

Seriously though, I think we have missed out on quite a few epic moments which is disappointing. Just introducing some of Robb's bannermen would have greatly improved the episode..Greatjon tearing a few people apart would have been nice, that guy dying whilst releasing greywind, greywind going spare... . But then, Robb's whole arc this season has been poor. Just basically him and his wife/mother sitting around going over the same things. As it is, non-book readers might lose a lot of impact without bannermen being there, especially when all of the remaining northern lords turn up really ****ed later on! How hard would it have been to have actually had the Manderley introduced and maybe given him a line, instead of just sitting there?.. Would improve it greatly imo.

The greatjon was off at the bedding wasnt he, isnt that how they got him under control, by him not being there, then next day he was a hostage.
So the rest of the jons stayed in line.

Iirc, one of the Freys has a drinking contest with Greatjon, and gets him really drunk... He still manages to take a few out though!

I understand that they can't show everything and there are budget constraints etc, but a scene like that would have been epic!

One thing I thought about this episode- Arya /Hound was absolutely perfect!... Can't fault it.

Especially Arya telling him about Jaquen, and Sandors reaction

Last thing I remember the Greatjon actor was involved in a court case because someone bit off his ear or something! If anything though that's a bonus when you're thinking Northern.

The scene was a lot more one sided, even if they were all drunk, I wanted to see Smalljon bludgeon someone with a leg of lamb :p

I understand the Clive Mantle wasn't available for part of the filming due to other work. As such he has been dumped from the series - the Producers' rule for this series is that once you leave, even for a moment, you can't come back. As of book five Greatjohn is alive but still a prisoner. But with Jaime demanding that Frey release them all, a separate war in the North looks likely in book six.

Exactly what I have been saying for weeks! That robb has been doing nothing but drinking wine and doing all the big talk of what he is going to do but not see him do any of it.

DULL, as such I was glad he got killed off.

No more of that crap for the first 7-8 hours in the start of this season anymore at least.

I think production costs hurt Robb, as I've said before, they are not going to spend millions showing Robb winning small skirmishes and battles and taking more and more land, defeating more and more Lannister parties, just for the sake of building his tactical prowess and battle mastery.
It would have been nice to see, but battles in GoT are mostly glossed over.

So, exactly like the book then? And the other bannermen at the RW were barely mentioned in the book either. The whole point of SoIaF is that it's about people, not events. Because they are books for adults.

They were fleshed out a little throughout the book(s) but though... I think it was a mistake to not introduce any of them tbh... Robb's guard, the Manderleys, Mormonts etc. Just a small introduction would have been enough really. I think it took some power away from the event personally, and I can understand non-book readers not getting, or being disappointed with Robb's story tbh... All we ever really saw of Robb's camp was a small room with 3-4 people in it. It has been the aspect to that I have been most disappointed with so far(maybe apart from Blackfish).
