Able to elaborate on why it's not as good as having direct network cable?

I keep hearing good and bad things about the mains solution but never what brand/model is good to go for or what aspects are bad?

I use a Netgear, and surge protectors can cause the adapter to not function properly.

wireless through surprisingly decent Virgin Broadband Superhub, latency hasn't been an issue, not even fast paced games like COD: MW2, occasionally in laggy games but pretty sure its not me lagging! haven't used wired for a while now, never saw the need, used to years ago but the last wi-fi router i used was really solid. ;)

Wireless, running a wire all across the house would be a bit of a death trap. My old wirless card used to get bad LAG spikes and drop all the time but now i have a multi antenna card and its been very very good.

I'm wireless but only playing MMO games, I don't find the lag any issue at all but then I've not tried any FPS games. Never have issues with drops outs or random spikes.

Desktop and server are direct ethernet wired. Xbox 360, Wii and WDTV Live via homeplugs. Notebook, PSP, phones etc. all wireless.

I had to put up with wireless on my main PC for years and it was beyond ****. The technology has improved a fair bit since then but it's still the worst option of the three by far in most instances.

It uses your mains cabling that's why it's not as good.

I mean I'm say, 20m from the router and it's a lot more than 20m in the distance of power cable to get to me.

Max rate of the Devolo plugs im using is 85Mbps and I get 24Mbps where I am.

However I also say the difference is irrelevant vs network cable

I'm on a 10Mb connection, I get the full 10Mb download speed and ping times are as low as if I was on network cable.

So I'm only missing out on having to route a 25-30m network cable through the house when I use the mains to carry the signal.

That's what i was looking for :D

With a child that's about to start crawling i need to get rid of my network cable down the stairs and infront of doorways solution so looks like mains is the way i'll be going, replies like yours there give me hope :D
