Gaming Laptops worth it?

Hey guys, thanks for your responses.

Right now I'm thinking, I'll use my Shield tablet to stream to my monitor or 4K TV downstairs. Then eventually when I upgrade my main rig, I'll transfer, the CPU, mobo, ram and one GPU to an ATX case downstairs. I have enough spares to mean that the second rig would just need a case + PSU and OS.

True to my billing as the most indecisive person I know I have changed my mind again...

I realised it would cost me at least £350 on top of my rig upgrade to get the parts I need for an HTPC/living room build - doesn't seem worth it. I'm back to the laptop idea (sorry!) and upgrade the main rig next year.

Right now I'm debating whether a 980m is worth it over a 970m

I've got one of these.

It's a nice quick laptop. I don't use it for gaming though but I ran a couple of benchmarks on it and it scored pretty well.

It's a good size and not too heavy. Can be quite noisy if you put the fans to full.

Looks decent, how is the 15" screen, large enough? I was actually looking at the17" version of that but the reviews said it runs hot and loud, which is worrying as it might lead to an early death.

The screen is pretty awesome in my opinion.
I didn't go for the 17" as I wanted a laptop I could actually be bothered to carry around.

Cheers, I'll see if I can find a few reviews on the 15" version. I like the fact it is powerful and portable just worried about heat and noise.

After you mentioned smaller laptops I took an interest in the MSI GS40. Looks like some nice performance for the price. Similar concerns to the P35X though - noise and heat

Your concerns of noise and heat are the same as mine. Seems all gaming laptops suffer from this to some degree. The larger units seem to be the best for handling heat and keeping the fan noise low. So the Asus g751/752, msi gt72 and Alienware will all be pretty good. Pretty much anything else is a hairdryer. The other one i've been looking at is the XMG P706. Seems to handle noise and heat pretty well and is slightly thinner than the others mentioned above.

Yeh on the othe side of the size spectrum I have been tempted by the Asus G752 (970m version). I originally wanted the MSI GT72 (980m).

Hmm might be better sticking to the large ones.

My mate has an alienware 17" laptop.
It's like carrying a paving slab around.

A lad at work has an MSI gaming laptop. It's a couple of years old now but it's well made and still going strong. He does use it on an air cooled platform though.

So I think I've settled on the Asus G752. I'm more worried about cooling and noise than gaming outside of the house - although I will take it to friends houses.

Saving starts and I'll grab this in Feb/March

What's the spec?

i7 4750hq, 16 GB DDR3L, 128GB M2 drive, GTX 970m. Not sure about G-Sync though.

I pulled the trigger and purchased a gaming laptop in addition to my main rig and I have to say I'm very pleased with it. Performance is very good just getting used to a screen half the size of my main rig is a little hard.

Purchased -

Loving the gsync as well :)

Nice, yeh I was very tempted by that actually. I nearly went MSI and nearly chose GTX 980m as well, but all the laptops in that range were like £500 more so I figured with the money I save I could give my desktop an upgrade next year.

The 970m works well at 1080p the Asus machines run cool and are very quiet as well.

Yeh exactly my thoughts. Cool, quiet and powerful laptop for about £1,100.

Also,I'm not sure I see the point in more than 1080p at 17". I'm seeing loads of laptops with 3k/4K screens at 14" or 15" and I can't help but think what is the point. Rather put that towards a 4K 40" monitor or something.

Yeah I'm of the same train of thought, why would you need 4k on a laptop screen, especially if you intend to game on it, unless the game is old you'll never get decent frame rates without drastically dropping the image quality

Exactly - the funny thing is I run my desktop on a 40" 1080p TV (not monitor) and I am still very happy with it. TBF I also have the PS4 connected to it so a proper TV is useful.

I got the 3k screen on my laptop as I use it for running VM's, and I can get multiple desktops on at the same time.
If i was to game with it, I'd probably do it at 1080p anyway, as even the 980m won't be able to do anything decent with 3k resolution.
