Gaming Laptops worth it?

Saw a great deal on the G751. Basically the same laptop so went for that. Arrives Monday lol

Nice! I'd be very interested to hear you're initial thoughts as this is looking more and more like the one I'll be going for too. I think I've seen the deal you're referring to. I'd be interested to see if it comes with G-Sync as I can't really figure out which versions have it or if it can be added to all versions via a bios update or something. Not that it matters as it's a good deal for what seems like a great laptop.

Yeh was a significant saving over the G752. I'll give a quick update when I can. No time to do a full on as traveling for work from Wednesday onwards.

I'm hoping for G sync but like you I couldn't tell. Not a deal breaker though.

I can confirm it has G-Sync! :p:p

At least that's what the sticker on the front says. Just downloading some benchmarks etc to try it out. But first an upgrade to Windows 10!

Nice. So to confirm was this from the online shop where you can "Save" money on laptops? If you get me... ;)

Also whats the noise levels like on idle and load?

Edit: just checked and its gone up £150 since yesterday :(

D'oh that's annoying. Might be worth the newer G752 then.

Noise levels are brilliant - near silent at idle. I ran 3D Mark Firesyrike extreme while it sat on my lap and could barely hear it. Got a score of 3426, not too shabby.

Does the G752 not seem expensive for what your getting? compared to others? Also the sales page is rubbish, It states USB3.1 USB C but not Thunderbolt 3 and doesn't give a full sales description like the other laptops?

Although Asus are releasing an EGPU but the stats are not amazing due to how they are doing it, it would be better using a proper Thunderbolt 3 EGPU from what I've seen.

The 752 does look great though, but looking at it the ACER NITRO looks to be a better deal than even the Dell 7559 due to it using DDR4 RAM and having a Thunderbolt 3 port?

Although the ACER Predator looks like a nice machine too.....

I need a multitasking laptop that I can do my degree on (IT) I'm going to be doing virtualisation on multiple desktops or on the same screen, so need heaps of RAM, reliable, great cooling, and able to handle the VM's.

I play games but not to the level I used to, I play RTS like Grey Goo and Supreme Cdr, Final Fantasy games from Steam Store and Eve Online.

I was looking at the MSI Dominator Pro but am now in 2 frames of mind as it was quite expensive, not sure what the battery life is on the G752? Anyone know? I could switch to iGPU for while I'm working in MS Office etc.? Is it easy to switch on the ASUS? The MSI has a dedicated button for switching between iGPU and Dedicated.

A higher res screen would be a bonus for VM's but with both Windows 10 and Linux you can have multiple desktops so shouldn't be a problem.

So, how you getting on with the Asus now you've had it for a while?

Hey bro - I'd love to answer this but I got it Monday eve after work and have been travelling since Wednesday morning for work. It will be good to be back on Friday so I can get some time with it (and my wife ofcourse :D ).

Yeh the Acer Predator might be a better shout, looks stunning, I think it may be louder though.

I'm liking the trend of e-GPUs, hoping my thunderbolt port supports it but it isn't type C... This type of solution may make me get rid of my desktop PC.

Hmm not sure the G751/G752 is the laptop for you. It has a fairly poor battery (believe this is under 3 hours), and is pretty damn heavy. Not a good option for a uni, multitasking laptop that will need to be carried around.

The reason I got it was to use as a portable gaming rig within my home and occasionally for friends houses. The main benefits are very cool and quiet operation. Not something I want to carry day to day.

Perhaps the MSI GS40 is a better option for you? Small form factor and light - it is basically the opposite of this though as it is loud and hot when gaming. Thoughts?

Just done some reading of reviews and the ACER Predator has an amazing battery life comparable to mid range ultra books .... so they say.

It has stupendously fast ssd too, and is pretty much equal on noise and cooling compared to the ASUS.

ACER -
- Battery Type: 8-cell Li-Ion
- Battery Life: 8 hours

ASUS -
- Battery: 6-cell

But tests show ASUS lasting but 1.5 hrs on a web test and ACER lasting 5-6 hrs, possibly without switching to I-GPU so more to be had I think. ACER is looking to be a winner in all reviews I've read.

ACER being a comparable price to the ASUS

ACER - £1499.99

ASUS - £139.99 with a 6% discount obviously knowing that ACER kicks their BUTT, but discount wont last long.

Comparing prices and spec's the ACER is still best as its read write blows ASUS out of the water and battery life combined the ACER easily makes up for ASUS's discount.

I've found the ACER on another site same spec but a 980 4GB graphics instead of the 970, price £1529.99....... only £30 more for the 980 but on 10% off sale so not sure how long that would last.....

But OCUK offer 3yr Warranty ....

OCUK rep when are the ACER Predators due in stock, I'm almost ready to get my wallet out.

FOUNDATION DEGREE OF SCIENCE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND COMMUNICATIONS

My next module is virtualisation

My degree (admittedly) 16 years or so ago now, was fantastically dull in comparison. Largely defunct programming languages and (software) Systems Design.

Awful. Started contracting before it ended instead. Yours sounds far better and I'd be interested to do something like that these days even.

Well after much research and going back and forth, I've also settled on a G751JT. I found a pretty good deal on a version with a 256GB SSD instead of the 128, for a fair bit cheaper than the G752. So I've gone for it. Should arrive Saturday. The 751 and 752 are practically identical in spec but I much prefer the look of the 751.

The Asus G751 just ended up ticking the most boxes for me, compared to the others.

- Reduced noise and heat were right up there and the Asus seems to be the very best for this. Check!
- I wanted at least a GTX 970m. Check!
- Although it looks very much like a "gaming laptop" I think it still looks real classy and has very good build quality. Some others I've seen are just a bit too over the top in terms of looks. The Acer for me is a little too much the other way, despite the spec and price being good. Same goes for the Alienware. Check!
- G-Sync. This was also right up there. I've seen how smooth this makes gameplay and I think this will be standard on anything moving forward. Check!
- 256B SSD. I like to have the regular games I play installed on the SDD with the OS, so 128 is normally a bit tight. Check!

I think I made the right choice. I figure that if in a year or two I realise the GTX 970 isn't powerful enough any more then I should still be able to sell it for a good amount and put money towards an upgrade. This particular range seem to be well sought after and should hold value for a while. But in reality(with me playing less and less demanding games) I'm fairly certain it will last me at least 5 years.

Yeah after some reading, it looks like the G752 is a flop and even the reviewers are saying buy the 751 instead due to better battery life, better looks, and well better everything.

I'm still stuck as to what laptop to get, with a good deal/offer the MSI dominator pro would be a great option, with 4 SSD connections available and 4 ram slots?

Acer Predator has 2 SSD slots one bigger than the other lol, and one 2.5", and 4 ram slots.

Alienware 17 has 4 SSD slots and only 2 ram slots.

I'd like the option of having 4 ram slots due to doing visualization, but HDD slots are good for RAID for redundancy options.

Now Alienware are doing a nice package on their 17"

500GB PCIe SSD
1TB HDD
i7 6820
16GB DDR4 RAM
8GB NVIDIA 980m
4K Screen

under £2000

OMG
