Gaming pc (future proof) gpu in hand

@Plec @orbitalwalsh what’s the easiest way of getting a windows key and windows 10 pro on a usb? I got a 128gb usb stick today :)
I have to be careful about site naming because of forum rules - but they turn up on auction sites frequently. There's always a risk with grey market keys but when they're only ~£5 it's not the biggest risk. There are other sites with reputed sellers/and guarantees if key fails etc (more expensive) - and are easily found (i've used a site that sounds like penguin in the past and all keys have worked.). Even if a key were to expire after 2 years you're still quids in if you rinse and repeat a few times - but i haven't had a key fail yet...

To make the install USB use the Downoad Tool here - Clicky - choose the creating a bootable USB device option once you've downloaded the Tool and executed it.

thanks so much as always :D

going to start tonight after work, how much thermal paste should be applied to the cpu cooler? :) (if none applied already)

People have different methods - i use a pea sized blob on the centre of the CPU and let pressure/heat spread it out with the fixing of the heatsink.

I'll find a YouTube clip showing how it works...

With the above - you need to remember the heatsink will apply a lot more even pressure and once heated will spread the TIM even more. I've, personally, never had coverage problems using blob method.

@Plec

do I have the fans in the correct orientation with the motherboard? The way I have positioned them the fan point upwards towards the top of the case.

also, do I need to use the supplied low noise adaptor cables :) TIA

Do you have a rear venting fan on your case?

If so, ideally, you would reposition and have the cooler orientated so that the fans vent out of the rear. The heat from the tower being eliminated and venting into the rear fan.

At the moment it's pulling warm air from the GPU - not ideal. I'm sorry - but you need to reposition :/

*i almost added orientation advice but didn't have the time. I can link some vids if needed?

EDIT: Your fans need to be reversed too - so that they blow through the heatsink - at the moment they're pulling air.

After a few choice words....

yes I have a rear fan @Plec
Fans still need reversing - sticker should be against heatsink.

*Sorry - if i wasn't queuing up to to berate someone (well a few) i would write a comprehensive checklist for you. But Heatsink is correct - but fans need correcting (remember to place memory in before you put fans on)

I can’t emphasise how much I appreciate your time (even more so within a team meeting!!!)

ram wise, do I install them in alternate slots (2 modules...A2 &B2)?

Gpu next? :D
Yes and no, 2 choices:
  • test outside of the case on some cardboard - so GPU needed (short power pins with a screwdriver (will explain if needed) - unless onboard power switch - check manual)
  • or install in case - but don't install the GPU until it's within the case. Don't be afraid to use the heatsink as a guide (i.e. hold) to help align it into case.
  • You know about case risers?
sorry about edits - still having a difference of opinion in TEAMS.

*install front header cables in first (case cables) - more space.

Looks good - install PSU, work out what cables you need (including GPU's), and route them (via back) and plug motherboard ones in etc...

Then install GPU with case horizontal - and secure with screws and attach cables before placing it in it's vertical (normal) postition.
