There is some sense in doing so but not necessarily. When Toyota serviced the car they only recommended the NSR side to be replaced for now.
I don't think it's necessary. I can see that logic with suspension parts like springs, dampers, tyres etc, because their performance may degrade (or at least, change) over time - so suddenly replacing one side with new parts only might cause an imbalance with the worn parts.
But with a bearing, the same doesn't really apply. A bearing wearing out on one side isn't going to effect the performance of the other, nor have a noticeable effect on handling.
Na not really. I changed the nsf wheel bearing on my '79 passat about 4 years ago from the original. The front drivers side is still original (40 years) and going strong.
