Gauntlet 2009 Joiners Thread!

I assume I don't :p

I downloaded 6.6.36 and it detected my quad and both my GTX 260s. I have changed the preferences so it uses my PC all the time. Is there anything else I need to change?
When I get my MILLION :D tiffy in F@H I'll have a play with Bionic/Seti before the gauntlet.

It currently says there's no work, is this correct?

:p

You may wish to change the network usage preferences so that you end up with several days' worth of WUs. Mine's set at 4 days + 1 additional day, which results in me getting several hundred WUs on my quad-core rig... handy for getting through those inevitable outages.

The only other thing is making sure which WUs you're getting. SETI has two sub-projects: Mainbeam (SETI Enhanced, or the bog-standard WUs) and Astropulse (far more detailed but the WUs for that take far longer to crunch). I can't remember the default settings, but if you want to receive WUs for both projects ensure that there's a tick next to SETI Enhanced and Astropulse v5 (ignore the Astropulse option; as far as I'm aware there are no WUs being produced for this anymore). For reference, my [email protected] takes around 9-10 hours for an Astropulse WU but only ~1hr 30 for the standard ones, so it's up to you if you want to run Astropulse.

The optimised apps get through WUs quicker - far quicker, in some cases - with the rather obvious result being that you get work done faster and, therefore, more credit...

If you get time, have a peruse here to find the appropriate app(s). Of course, it's not necessary to use optimised apps - but it does make sense and I strongly recommend them. However, you'll have to ask someone else about the GPU apps because, having never used them, I haven't a bloody clue :D

No point doing it if you're not going to do it probably :D

However, I don't understand a word on that page. Lots of apps fit my system spec, but I don't know which is best.

I think I'll copy biffa, since he has a quad with GTX 260s :p

Hi Happy,

Lunatics do a great installer which allows you to chose which type of units you wish to run and also installs the applicable optimised clients, it looks like this.

Installer.JPG

The Lunatics download page is here http://lunatics.kwsn.net/index.php?module=Downloads;catd=9

You just need to choose either the Win32 or Win64 Lunatics Unified Installer V0.2

Cheers, Simon.

Ah brilliant thanks :)

Do I need to uninstall the other Bionic client I downloaded?

No this just modifies the settings within Boinc and installs the optimised apps, you just need to pick the apps to run and any CPU specific optimisations ie AMD/INTEL and go from there.

I would suggest you choose to run all three types Astropulse, Multibeam (cpu) and Multibeam (Cuda) Boinc will then download both Astropulse and Multibeam for the CPU and Multibeam units for the GTX. You should then be able to run 6 processes simultaneously. With the current lack of AP units even though you choose to run them Boinc may only be able to download MB (Multibeam units) 603 for the cpu and 608 for the GTX's

Cheers, Simon.

ps. You will need to disable SLi to run two Cuda tasks together same as when Folding

I'm having ago at getting this working, seeing as no one will want to talk about folding for 3 weeks!

I'm at the same stage as Happy at the moment and getting the same server message.

edit: Working, I'll leave it overnight and see if it's worth me doing it for the comp.

What you're both experiencing is a not-too-uncommon 'feature' of Berkeley: no work available. It usually happens because of a server crash, but I think this time it's due to data pipelines issues. Keep trying, it'll be sorted out eventually.

I'm hoping that these issues will be sorted out by the time the gauntlet starts; otherwise it's going to be a bit of a damp squib...

I could be flippant and say welcome to our world but that wouldn't be very encouraging would it ;)

There are occasional problems at Seti but they are often temporary, the server status page is here http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/sah_status.html

It shows one work unit available to download which essentially means none and Looking at the status there is only one splitter running and producing new units.

If you can leave it running overnight it will probably be able to download and cache some work which will then see you through these occasional blips.

Cheers, Simon.

Is there any way to set up which cores or GPUs are crunching? I wouldn't mind setting this up so it does seti on my CPU but I still fold on my GPUs. Sorry for the noob questions!

The CUDA client is (was) optional. Assuming you've got a quad, you should probably limit it to 75% of available processors too (leaving one core free for F@H).

Mind you, this is about competition so I should be encouraging you to give all your cores to SETI for a month. :p

On some machines I do Seti on cpu and folding on GPU, but on a couple I do Seti on the GPU and Folding on the CPU.

If you run the optimised setup from lunatics it lets you choose to just run Seti on the CPU or the GPU, then you either run the GPU or the CPU FAH client

I have must have borked mine, because it's been running all day and still not found any work :(

Nope its still fubar, but it is the weekend.

Once you get going you can up your cache and keep 4 or 5 days worth to keep you busy during the dry periods :)
