GD may close for a while

It all depends on the thread. The guy was asking where to take his girl on a second date. It's not exactly a question you would ask some randoms on a forum, so I think the sarcastic comments are justified. He got his serious answer (if he really needed it) and nobody was hurt.

I don't like the idea of having every thread full of serious replies, I assure you it will get boring, even the posts that have a serious alternative version of the post attached.
He was looking for ideas, everyone can awnser that, Some one said take her out for a picnic I bet he never even thought of that. I'm not saying every post should be serious. But when you have thread after thread with just spammy jokey replies it gets tedious. if it was just a few a thread or the replies contained useful stuff at the same time its fine.

just how much bandwith a month would these forums use? because bandwith is pretty cheap so i doubt it costs that much

I think if people just used the RTM function properly, GD will improve.

I'd like to see how many RTM requests Don's get per day from GD, compared to how many posts per day are 'IBTL', or a dancing padlock.

There was a thought that many of the infantile threads being started in GD are because its the school holidays and more kids/students (the dumb kind) are about.

Personally instead of threats why not something more proactive like cancelling new members for a while, which i seem to remember has been done before. If there is an issue with volume of posting then don't allow more people to sign up, and crack down on the crap for 3 months with more perma bans for multiple minor offences.

Personally i don't see what the issue is, if i see a crap thread then i ignore it, the quality of GD will never be very high, but scrapping it entirely will kill a lot of the social aspects of the forum.

No GD =

no meet threads.
no tv threads since they were banned from music & box office.
no news and current events threads.

i mean can you imagine this place if it was entirely concentrated on computer discussion, it would lose so much appeal, i'd only visit when i had a problem or needed new spec etc.

personally i'd like to see more constructive changes than a blanket bannage/closure.

What's RTM?

Report to moderator, its the little red triangle with the ! on each post.

This one:

Could the actual rule breakers not be chastised instead of punishing everyone ? Warnings, suspensions etc.

It seems a little unfair to punish the many for the few. My tuppence worth, although I appreciate I don't pay the bills.

I know that we have rules. I still think post deletion or closure should contain more on why they where deleted or closed so people know. Ok ones like competitors is easy.

Little Exclamation mark in red sign under everyones posts (with the exception of you own).
Practically direclty under their name, it Reports the post To the Mods.

You're missing out on the games, photos, music, motors and sports dicussions. OcUK isn't just computers + gd.

Did you RTM any of those posts then?

No, because at the moment spam replies seemed to be allowed. If Replies started getting deleted for that reason, then I would. I have used the RTM before.

....

Personally, I think the threads in themselves and subjects are usually OK - it's the attitudes and the people posting in the threads that for me has ruined GD.
Perfect solution ..... let's keep GD but remove all those naughty people that keep posting in them. ;)

.....oh wait ..... :D

Mods have encouraged members time and time again to use the RTM function if they think a post or even a thread is inappropriate.

Taken from the GD Quality sticky.

If you think its spam then RTM it – let the Mods decide because it is their job after all. That way you won’t keep bumping it to the top of the page *and* you’ll have brought it to the attention of someone who can do something about it.

that's talking about spam threads, not replies. I'm sure some have but I cant think of a time when individual replies have been deleted, for spam reason. I have seen a few good threads get locked due to an abundance of spam replies though.

I'm quite sure it applies to replies too. I doubt very much that the dons want you to report spam threads, but not spam posts.

I've RTM'd at least a dozen crap posts, and not long after, they're deleted.

Have I been doing it wrong?
