GK110 and GK104

Nvidia is about to launch desktop Geforce GTX 700 series cards and this time the launch starts from the top down. The GTX 780 is set to replace the GTX 680 and the new card is based on the GK110 chip that we all know from Titan cards.

The chip is actually slower than Titan and is internally called Titan LE, which means that GTX 780 should end up slower than Titan cards. Our sources claim that the card should end up about 30 present faster than the GTX 680 and the launch date is expected by the end of May. This means the card comes very close to Computex, the biggest computer trade show in Asia that kicks off on June 4th.

The runner up is continuing the naming tradition and is simply named Geforce GTX 770. It is based on a new GK104 – 425 improved 28nm core. The current GTX 680 has the GK104-400-A2 core, and the 425 implies some slight optimisation and changes.

The GTX 770 stays loyal to the Kepler architecture and just like with the GTX 680, we can expect one cluster less compared to GTX 670. Performance wise the card should be between 20 and 25 percept faster than the GTX 670. The launch is expected in mid May.

The real next generation has now been shifted to Geforce GTX 800 series, in case Nvidia continues the same naming tradition and it is going to be based on Maxwell. This new GPU promises a huge leap forward with capability of more than twice the Giga Flops per watt than Kepler. Maxwell has been pushed to 2014, but we don’t know the exact date.

I mean come on.. There next gen cards are slower than the Titan?
What the hell is Nvidia doing?!

That statement is full of contradictions..... The new 780 will be 30% faster than the 680, when the titan is barly that anyway? yet it wont be as fast as the titan? EH?

I would expect this, Titans will still be twice the price of a 780 and they're not exactly old.

Why would they make them faster than their £1000 card? This will just take sales away from it, not exactly the best business plan.

Although I don't believe the numbers here, no doubt that the 700 range is real and it is obvious it is going to be faster than the 600 range but not as fast as a Titan.

That's not how I read it. The 7 Series are not Maxwell and so are not technically next gen.

So GTX 700 series is more like a refresh now of 600 series.


I think all these events follow on from 7970 not providing large enough performance over 580 at the launch coupled with 680 (GK104 midrange) competing well with 7970. Had 7970 provided say 40-50% performance improvement over 580 and 680 was full fat GK110, then things would have been different.

Hmm it's an awkward one, the performance gaps are fairly tight at the top, slower then a titan but faster then a 680 puts it, what, 10-15% faster then a 7970?

Oh well, maybe it will give AMD a kick up the bum to get the 8000 series released.

If they start turning the GTX 780 out at the same price point as the GTX 680, this could really push AMD to take action.
 
I thought AMD were normally first out the blocks. However Nvidia might just pip them this time. This is what happens when you stand still!!

from what we've seen of 670 vs 680, I would put money on a GTX780 (Titan LE) being within 5% of a Titan when both are fully overclocked

but yes, you would think this would force AMD to try to get the 8 series out sooner than early next year

I'd presumed that 780 would be around christmas with maxwell end of 2014/early 2015... but if this is right, this could mean maxwell early 2014

That and the 32nm was cancelled meaning the 6950/6970=vliw4 didnt provide a great performance lead over vliw5 5850-5870 as constrained to
40nm process.
