Geforce GTX1180/2080 Speculation thread

I'm surprised about the logic for why you think Nvidia are delaying.
I see this as no different to why Intel have only very slowly moved the game forward in CPUs, i.e. lack of genuine competition.
I wouldn't be surprised if the original 11 series card go live dates were proposed because of an expectation that AMD would have something that they would need to compete with. Right now, that's just not happened. So in the meantime, Nvidia get to keep pumping out current generation cards.

Remember that the card itself is just made of plastic and silicon, so the raw materials are dirt cheap. The expensive bits is the design and the setting up of the manufacturing plant to churn them out.
If Nvidia can delay setting up the plant for the next generation, then I'd expect their profits to be MUCH bigger, because their average cost/unit produced will be dropping.

Exactly, what did people expect Mr Leather Jacket Man to say? He has old inventory to shift at full prices!!

Yep,otherwise people would delay buying new cards. OTH,apparently Metro:Exodus is delayed too and that has RTX.

Got pushed back to Q1-2019. :(

Hmm,it makes me wonder then - I assume Nvidia would want to have cards with hardware support for RTX technology in time for the game.

It makes me wonder - is this down to the competitive landscape or is GDDR6 not quite there yet??

They don't make anything, setting up a new plant to make the dies would be TSMC/GF/Samsugs job. TSMC in progress fab (Fab18) started construction in in Januray and is due to completion in 2020 and it takes a good amount of time to ramp up to full production

There last fab (Fab 15) took almost 3 years and $9 billion to build then month/years after to ramp up to full capacity.

In short is not a quick or simply process to add extra chip manufacturing even if it all goes to plan. When it doesn't just ask Intel atm!

But Nvidia already have the designs. The R&D is already done and it is sitting there. What you are suggesting is short term thinking that could be bad in the long term. Lets be honest, we do not have the data required to say what is best for them. We are all just guessing here with the info available to us.

If sales numbers are dropping which I think they are, then why should they not press their advantage and release something to get people who otherwise would not have upgraded to upgrade? Right now it seems to me PC gamers are losing enthusiasm and getting bored with old tech as we are used to new stuff more often. Some are moving to console gaming which is not good for Nvidia.

From what I read the 12nm manufacturing process TSMC have is designed for Nvidia. They only have a small window to make use of this, otherwise it might be wasted as 7nm is only 1 year away, for AMD anyway. They may make less money per unit at the start, but getting more people to upgrade to Nvidia cards could be better for them in the long term. Also prices will come down with time for it more they use it or they can just increase the price of the GPU a little to make up for it.

Just look at intel, what they have done is biting them in the arse now. I have not been given a reason to upgrade my roughly 5 year old 4770K and now I will likely go AMD Ryzen next year with 7nm Zen 2.

One thing worth remembering - Nvidia have said "no new GPU's for the foreseeable future" for the last 3 generations. 6 months later new GPU's.

On this alone, you can guarantee they'll be along soon and any mention of Q1 2019 is a self manufactured rumor or may even point to what's coming after a Pascal refresh.

New cards MUST be around the corner, everyone who was going to buy a pascal card must have bought one or three by now.
I can't see miners just buying more and more cards which would keep nvidias income going, they need a new product range soon to start the cycle all over again.

For people in your situation, you should consider buying EVGA now as you will have a 90 day step up option.

true but they only let you step up to some crappy version, I though i could upgrade the gtx 1070 to one of their FTW3 coolers instead they wanted me to upgrade to an almost vanila card not much of a upgrade option.

That's a personal perspective. I upgraded a 1060 to a 1080ti FE and it was perfect for me as I always custom water cool my cards.

Why would they even think about new cards? They're as good as a monopoly on high end gaming cards. They could wait until next year and still sell thousands of cards with a small price normalisation.

Could the delay be indicative of any problems? We've all assumed that nvidia are just hanging tough to rinse every penny out of the current Pascal lineup but maybe there have been issues of some sort that have delayed a launch?

Volta has been out since last year so no problem there, sadly we have not seen any gaming cards from NVidia even though they are easier to manufacture than the professional cards due to not having any DP or Tensor cores.
