General Filament Chat

Just don't go expecting massively quicker print times for a 0.6mm nozzle (like I did). Next time you slice something, check the time for a 0.4mm nozzle, change it (in slicer) for 0.6mm and slice it again. You'll probably find the time is similar unles you're printing a single wall vase mode. More plastic pushed but slower movement. Unless you're getting into things like Super Volcano hot ends that can keep up with pushing move volume of plastic AND the higher movement rate perhaps.

I'll have a look later. Have you used a 0.8 nozzle? Is that much difference?

I've been printing a lot of functional items recently that it doesn't matter about visible layer lines. I'm sure I saw that the larger nozzle size makes a stronger item too..

It's supposed to be stronger but I've not gone as high as 0.8mm. It's look rougher but if speed is the important part, slice it for both nozzles and check the predicted time. Your limitation may be other things like how fast it can melt the plastic or minimum layer time (required for cooling)

I guess for the price of a nozzle I should just experiment with it. It certainly wouldn't be a bad thing if I could print some basic things quicker. I think I'll order a 0.2 as well to have a play with some finer details

0.2 is definitely slower but the detail is noticably higher. They're great for inlaying smal text for control panels like this:

What ZipLoc bags are people using to store their filament in? Not sure what size I need. I see folk from the US refer to 1 gallon sizes being big enough which is about 3.8L

I found the electric pump good but the bags didn't last very long. I went food storage containers with printed inserts. Details in the 2nd half of this post and links in a post a few down from that.

I'm using the cereal boxes as well, with silica beads in these

I converted on of the boxes to hold the reel that's currently printing, similar to this

If anyone is looking for a dryer the Sunlu S4 is a cracking £106.99 on Amazon and sold by Sunlu themselves, that's much cheaper than their own website. If you only need a two roll dryer the Sovol SH02 is only £49.99 with free delivery from Creality. I just bought this one myself.
Please let us know how you get on with the Sovol. I am quite tempted given I was holding out for the Creality Space dryer that is currently £72 but would prefer a users view instead of online reviews. Been having an absolute headache with humidity at my place over the past few days so I've had a lot of stringy prints that require a heatgun to resolve.

Well first screw up made ordering filament. Ordered some midnight black thinking it was an especially deep/darker black than a regular black. Nope, turns out its actually a very dark blue. Will teach me for not paying attention!

I'd argue that it's not your mistake, they've mis-named it as it clearly ought to be "Midnight BLUE" then. It's alright, I've got some "grey" filament that looked a mid to dark grey on screen but has come out nearly white. Maybe I should check if the white I bought is actually dark grey!

Yeah I've emailed them to suggest they either rename it to just Midnight or Midnight Blue.

I bought some SunLu Bright Red, it was more a dark pinky red, I left a review stating this, they messaged me and sent me a different colour foc as way of an apology, so might be worth moaning about being colour blind ;)

I somehow managed to order two spools of Sunlu PETG Matte white instead of normal PETG. I thought I would give it a go though so left the printer to run overnight. Come the morning the print was covered in what can only be described as "cobwebs", what a mess to clean up plus the damn stuff kept sticking to me because for some reason I have always been a static(y) person. It turns out that this particular filament is very hydroscopic and sucks any moisture up like a sponge so I won't be using it again until my Sovol SH02 turns up on Saturday.

I bought some Sunlu Rapid PETG. red & black, the other day and dried it for 4 hours at 65c, to be fair to Sunlu they do state to dry it before use, and it printed fine last night. Going to print a Dual AMS stand out of it.

Heat gun for cleaning the cobwebs off the part. Make sure your spools are clearly marked as matte or not. Otherwise you may find yourself ordering in another spool to continue a print and finding the bottom matte and the top shiny. No prizes for guessing! :D

Speaking of heat guns, don't go 'cordless' like I recently did. Took delivery of this utter pos on Monday. Submitted a returns a minute after feeling the 'airflow'. Absolutely pathetic.

Spent a bit more and grabbed a Black & Decker, which then burnt me hand a bit :p Works a treat for eliminating stringing, especially in this weather where even the drypods in my AMS can't absorb moisture in the air fast enough.
