Geohot and Fail0verflow are getting sued

although it did take over 4 years from launch before the console was hacked. in reality it did not take 4 years of time.

PS3 is launched end of 2006.

Hacking community gets hold of consoles and start opening them up, running tests etc, in order to try and hack it, all attempts fail.

Some time in early 2010 Geohotz starts hacking the ps3, within a few weeks he says he has complete control of "something" tells everybody it is hacked and reveals the hack to the world. After this release no real progress is made.

Mid 2010 somebody manages to steal or buys a special engineers USB key and software made by Sony, which turns on a special engineering mode, using this mode people can install Sony's Backup manager and effectively backup games to their hard drives.

People start selling these special usb mod chips and software so people can store games on their hard drives.

Sony then update firmware to block this hack.

Late 2010 master keys are published by Geohotz.

So there has been 3 different community's working on hacks.

1 of them failed from the beginning.

1 of them managed to get a hold of Sony's own equipment and copycat it, but a monkey could have effectively done this, no real hacking went on.

Geohotz managed to crack the console within a short space of time, then he left it alone, came back and totally owned the console, all within a year.

I have no doubt in my mind if Geohotz had started as soon as the console had launched and he had the same amount of knowledge he did at the start of 2010 as he did in late 2006, the console could have been owned 3 years ago.

Umm not accurate and can't be bothered to re-type it all again google FailOverflow

i dont know when they started but were they not just a follow on from geohotz?

therefore without him they would be nothing?

Geohotz did a little bit, the data stick did a lot and failoverflow put it all together and released the master keys (or rather, the method to get them) to certain groups. Geohotz then released them to the world, proclaiming himself as the second coming of jesus.

Would be the short version.

Oh and your breakdown of events makes no sense. By your logic humans would have learnt to fly in but a mere 100 years of their evolution because some caveman jumped off a cliff but fell so no one tried for a few million years, then we invented planes. But the rest of the time didn't count cos they weren't trying k?

It's taken 4 years, that's the fact of the matter. Imo the guys who did hack it are only saying 'lolz we did it because of taking away otheros!' to make themselves look like an uber leet group of unstoppable hackers. The cooincidence lies in the stuff geohotz abused in the otheros option to get some of the PS3 opened up, because of this sony locked off otheros, but it was too late, the damage was done and failoverflow used geohotz's stuff and the usb stick to put together the 'master hack'

who really cares how long it took makes no difference and seems like some just want to use it as some sort of comfort blanket, weirdo's

Not at all.

The existence of the OtherOS option is more to blame for the hack than the removal of it as an option was. Its existence is what started the chain reaction to this hack, kicked off when Geohotz exploited it to get his hands on some of the inner workings (forget which off the top of my head). Those proclaiming 'lulz Sony serves you right, should have kept OtherOS!' should more likely be worrying about the damage the hack has done to the likelihood of a console manufacturer including such a feature in the future.

I'm sure Sony are certainly less likely to, that's for sure.

[EDIT] On reflection i guess i am using the 4 years fact as a comfort blanket of sorts. When i consider the effect it will have on the playstation brand i remember that it's had 4 years to establish itself in the market and the hack will likely be a drop (ok, truck load of water) in the ocean because of this. It's hardly a dreamcast (by this i mean, hacked early, pirated to hell and back, poorly marketed, utterly awesome, dead)

I do think people are overreacting to be honest - its like its the end of the world or something. If people want to hack - let them, if others dont want to - then dont.

Consoles have always been hacked and always will be - its what people do. Who cares if its taken 4 years blah blah blah - its hacked now so deal with it. Its not like you won't be able to buy your games - buy them, support the software companies that make them and just get on with it. So many toys being thrown out of the pram here its ridiculous - its just like fanboys always having to justify their purchase etc...

Back on topic, as far as the lawsuit goes I dont think Sony have a chance of winning - the JB for the iOS is legal (despite being able to pirate software on it) and i see no difference with the Geohot / failoverflow JB, so on what grounds Sony think they will win im not sure. Maybe a lawyer can answer that one!

Im trying to work out where this is too - on one side theres the legal iOS JB but on the other theres the illegal R4 DS carts. Both have produced the same effect but what makes one illegal and not the other ..

It will no doubt be decided by semantics and expensive lawyers...

ps3ud0

I explained it earlier in the US jailbreaking is legal as it was deemed to not circumvent copyright protection, ie its main use wouldnt be to use pirate games on iOS. R4 cars are illegal as although they allow you to use homebrew the main use of them is deemed to be piracy. This is where its a bit muddy even though GH has said he will not use it for piracy the point is that it CAN be used for piracy and some people already have the ability to run pirate games. This is all stalling tactics TBH until such time that Sony have come up with some way off making it not work or making it much harder for those who want to use it. Its a shame that others want to use this for piracy as the homebrew scene on the PS3 could have been pretty good and I dont think Sony would have bothered to much.
The "PS3 is doomed" people need to wake up TBH, the Wii only needs an SD card to run pirate software and i dont see that doing to badly.

if the homebrew community takes off, people could end up buying the PS3 purely to install XBMC or similar on it.

How else can you get a home media pc that small with a blu ray drive for that price ?

Its a no brainer if they get some good quality media centre stuff developed for it.

Quite true actually and a point I am actually bothered about, if Sony now stops the ability to USB upgrade (or any other form of FW update other than PSN) means we can't swap HDs, and that, would be a right pain as one day a nice SSD in my Slim would go down nicely :p

dont worry, fw updates by psn only will be no problem to get round by spoofing the networks ip on a pc on your home network and update over that, custom firmware too if you want so you can do it by usb again in the future

I wonder if this will scupper Sony's 10-year-plan and they will just bring out the PS4 earlier now.

tbh this hacking business is actually good for sony.

hackers will need custom firmware - sony will be able to detect this so you cant play online.

therefore you will need two consoles (1 for online and 1 for offline).

this should see an influx of sales of consoles. so if i need 2 consoles that also means i will need the disc for all games i want to play online. therefore only offline game sales are affected.

a lot of people wont see the point in buying another £200 console in order to save £30 every 6 months or so. therefore they wont even bother hacking. the hacking community will be relatively small therefore, of no real impact.

more than likely psn will implement something to keep its integrity intact, but what you say about people not paying 200 quid for a machine in order to save 30 quid every 6 months!! spend 200 quid and you can get the whole catalogue of ps3, why would you only get 2 games per year for free if you had a hacked console? theres a whole other world out there dude, but the hacking community is not so big in the grand global scheme of things, largely due to people totally ignorant to the fact this kind of thing even happens

I have decided that i, personally, do not feel this is a fair leagal argument. I am opposing this motion and i move to strike.

In fact on behalf of PSN users globally I am Done with this. please issue a class action within the alotted time othewise i will be forced to persue this further
