German Grand Prix 2013, Nürburgring - Race 9/19

The FIA have announced that all non team personel will be banned from the pitlane during qualifying and the race. Approved media wil be confined to the pit wall.

I assume this means that Ted will be stuck on the pit wall, and there won't be any pitlane camera men for pitstops? Seems a bit of an overreaction that will damage the coverage.

Knee jerk reaction which puts the blame on the victim and not the team that made the unsafe release, not the team that made the booboo with the tyres. What happens if the wheel had hit a pit crew? Ban them?

Next race if we have car driving into the back of the safety car, should FIA also ban them too?

Crazy decision.

Yea it is a bit strange, but they pit crew need to be in the pits, other people don't.

In the interest of producing 'the show' of Formula 1, I would argue they do.

None of the media, TV cameras, commentary, or even fans at the track need to be there for the race to happen, but it would be a pretty boring event from an entertainment prospect.

If Media are confined to the pit wall then I assume this means no interviews with the teams? No ability to go into garages and find out why people retired? No views of pit stops as they happen? Basically Ted and Gary Anderson will be limited to interviewing people on the pit wall and thats about it.

I agree it's not great, but it's a typical knee jerk reaction to the incident not a solution to the problem.

I guess we will have to see how it works out and see to what extent it affects the TV shows. As it only mentions the pitlane, it might be possible for the reporters like Ted and Gary to nip through the garages as a lot of them have an exit through the back?

Thats true. The pit lane edge is defined as the front of the garage isn't it? I.e. being in the garage is not the same as being in the pit lane? If thats the case then cameras and reporters could stay in the garages and peer out the doors. Not ideal, but better than nothing.

We will see at the next GP how it effects coverage.

Another thing they have brought in from the next race is a lower 80km/h pit limit. It was going to happen next year anyway, but they have brought it forward.

What sort of protection really would help you not get badly injured when getting hit by a 10kg tyre hitting them at 80km/h+
That's going to break bones regardless. If they did have some form of armour that could deal with that chances are it'd be so big and heavy they couldn't really move around safely.

Ted is in the garages rather than the pit lane anyway, so it won't cause issues there, at least.

Moving from one garage to the other would mean going all the way out the back, down the paddock, and then back in the rear of another garage, rather than just nipping between them out the front in the pitlane?

If this is the case, would they not just do it via comms? during the race Ted dosnt have to be face to face in this scenario does he.

Should be able to go into garages from behind & interview on pit wall. Does seem ott though.

Which during Qualifying and the race he has to do anyway as he won't be allowed into the pitlane at that point.

FP sessions, especially Friday's are less strict iirc.

Pirelli using softer compounds in Hungary:

just read this.

im obviously happy but i dont like how pirelli have the WCC particularly in their hands.

if they go hard lotus and ferrari will moan
soft, mercedes will moan

If KR goes to RBR i think they will be unstoppable, providing they take there form into the new regs era

luckily for RBR, they arent too bad on either conservative or aggressive choices from pirelli, when lotus are very bad on conservative and mercedes are very bad on aggressive approach

If it becomes a problem I'm sure they could up Natalie's work load during the race and have her cover the lower teams in their half of the pits? Not sure which way Ted does it now during the race tbh.

Everyone in the pitlane wears some sort of PPE, and those with their vision obscured (because they're staring down a viewfinder) have a spotter.
Job jobbed.

I was actually quite supprised to see the camera guy etc not having to wear some sort of helmet, Yeah the hit was nasty but imagine if his head struck the floor? I'd never thought about it before.

If the wheel had bounced even slightly and hit the guy in the head then it could have been a broken neck job. Still possible with wearing a helmet, but less so.
