Looking at the 2009 season in Britain and Valencia he qualified poorly and struggled while Rubens got a podium and a win. However of the 15 races where both cars finished, Button was ahead of Barrichello in 11 of them, and of the 4 where he trailed he finished one place behind at Monza and Suzuka.

Rubens is hardly a slouch. We all know how Ferrari treats their #2 drivers - as Kimi can attest to this week as Vettel got all the new parts.

It's no secret that Button was one of the most unlucky drivers in terms of the seats he got himself into. When eventually got a decent seat he capitalised on it and maximised the performance of it to ensure a championship win.
He got one real chance and took it. He then CHOSE to take a seat alongside and entrenched Hamilton at Mclaren, and was not outclassed in the first year, beat him in the second year, lost to him by 2 points in 2012.

Great driver, and one not afraid of a challenge.

Did he really maximize performance though? Seems odd to assume that considering all we have to compare to is Ruben who was close to retirement and nowhere near his best.

That's like saying Vettel maximized performance compared to Mark Webber, did he really? I'm not so sure.

Did he win the WC? I say he did! It's not always about winning the individual races, its a season... Ask Prost!

Notice how you also totally ignore the parts where he performed admirably and even out performed against one of the modern "greats" on equal terms..

That doesn't mean he maximized performance, there are only two drivers in that car and one was past his best and promptly retired the year after.. :D

He won because during the first half of the season they had a huge advantage, not because he was a great driver, he was a good driver, similar level to Rosberg.

I'm not ignoring it, it's just not relevant, neither Button or Hamilton were in a position to challenge for the championship that season.

Are you for real?! As pointed out above, he retired in 2011,not 2009.

So you say it's irrelevant to judge a drivers talent against another driver in the same car?

However you are doing JUST that with button and Barichello and using that as your main source for belittling his achievements?

Now I know you are just being argumentative for the sake of it.

He dragged that Brawn around the second half of the season, beat barichello soundly in the first half and then when the pressure was on him to maintain the lead (nothing to lose for Barichello!) He did just that and only secured the win in the penultimate race. I doubt there are many years in F1 where someone has had to handle such a differentual in relative performance across a season and STILL win the championship.

I never said that, it's all about context, the circumstances were different and they weren't even fighting for a championship (Redbull were untouchable), Hamilton was in and out of the stewards office every other race that year with contact with most of the drivers in top half of the grid, notability Massa and Maldonado.

Anyway, If I carry on I'll just keep repeating myself, you can believe what ever you want to believe about Button, clearly nothing I'm going to say will make any difference. :p
