To be fair it's not really upto Liverpool FC to instigate more punishment than what would be delivered through the courts though is it. If everything is fair and equal in the courts, the cowardly act should be judged against the fact he hasn't been in trouble for a good ten years and in the main upto now has been a good role model off the pitch. His work for charity and what he contributes to the community must also be taken into account.
That said i'm actually quite surprised how personally our scouse brothers on OcUK are taking this. Working themselves up into a frenzy and clutching at any straw to suggest that no matter how guilty he is by his own admission, provocation is justified for punching the guy not once, not twice but three times all allegedly of course and in self defence. I know scousers are renowned world word for their sense of humour but come on Stevie thats stretching your own hype a little too far.
When Rio got his ban for missing a drugs test they were all too quick to stick the knife in so I guess what goes around comes around. They seem surprised that there is very little love in the room for the snivelling little hypocrite
You suggest dropping him from his England duties would penalise the national team

No he's not. Gerrard isn't up for assault and anyone else wouldn't be behind bars for a first time offence.
Who's they? If you're referring to the Liverpool supporters on here none of us were registered back in 2003 when Rio was banned

He is so well behaved on and off the pitch normally in comparison with some of the others. He is, and I don't work in football or anything, in my view a model professional whose dedication is inspirational.
Frankly, I saw the footage and am not sure if what the newsreader is saying happened actually did: a bit unclear. However, he should know better than to get into scrapes like this and should be treated like anyone else would: justice shouldn't be changed for anyone.
It would be sad however, if he were forced to miss games / England games and to give up the captaincy.
We shall see however, and the law will decide. If he did do all of this then he will get punished.

Well, he is a serial diver, was going to go to chelsea for the money and has now hit a guy in a club for being cheeky to him. Yeah, definitely a model pro.
Who dives to win games?
Something that no football player should have to do period.
Steven Gerrard is a very good midfielder, probably the best England have at the moment, and arguably the best since Scholes, imo, He just doesn't need to dive.
He also repeatedly punched a man on a night out, over a argument over a song.
Model Professional, no sorry. There are far better professional's out there, there are far better at Liverpool.

He considered joining Chelsea in 2005 after a misunderstanding regarding the offering of a new contract - but he didn't. He remained loyal to his club and that's both respectable and professional.
He was an idiot for hitting that guy and it's completely wrong. But this isn't Joey Barton we're talking about. It was completely out of character. I'm sure he'll get some kind of community service or something and then everyone can just get on with their lives.

I'm not sure about the idea that Liverpool FC shouldn't bring any more punishment to bear on Mr Gerrard - if, as a result of their investigations into this, they feel that he has brought the club into disrepute or simply has not behaved fittingly according to his position then they are and should be entitled to levy further sanctions as appropriate under their disciplinary code. You're right that mitigating circumstances should be taken into account should they exist and his previous good character should count for him but I still reckon Liverpool FC would be well within their rights to punish him further if they felt it necessary.
While I'm normally of the opinion that what you do outwith work time is not a matter that your employer should concern themselves with my view does come with the major caveat that it is rightly their business if what you do reflects badly upon them or affects them through your actions. Like it or not footballers (or anyone in the public eye) have a different level of impact and therefore responsibility than most - personally I don't like it but I do have to acknowledge it.

Joey Barton? Good question and the "You're supposed to be in jail!" chant will be sung for the rest of his career no doubt.
Regarding Gerrard's diving accusations. Yeah, he goes down easily sometimes but come on, who doesn't? There are very, very few 'honest' pros around nowadays and the majority are as bad as one and other. It's just the part and parcel of the game now since the foreign invasion into the Premier League.
We're all used to seeing Gerrard carrying out his true Roy of the Rovers captaincy at Liverpool week in, week out and it is shocking when you watch the CCTV footage of him losing it. But I very much doubt it was simply over a song choice - there's probably more to it than that I would hope! There are two sides to everything, but I'm sure he'll be punished for that brief moment of madness.

I'd be very surprised if we did choose to punish him. Any fine would be laughed at simply because of the amount he earns each week and a club enforced suspension would only hurt our chances of silverware and impact on our income. Whether he'll be treated the same as a lesser player within the club I'm not so sure.

But thats what sticks in peoples throats with Saint Stevie. All too quick to go and blab in his serialised biography at the back end of a disappointing world cup that he hates divers. Yet before that world cup he took a dive in an England shirt and has done many times since. But as his manager would say "We dont like to talk about that"

True enough, it is the clubs right to choose to punish further or not. I'm not expressing any view on whether he did do it or what punishment he deserves if he did (I haven't even watched the video properly) as frankly I don't care that much about it but technically at least Liverpool have the right to impose further sanctions on him.

He has taken some dodgy tumbles I agree. I'm a Liverpool fan, but not one that wears permanent red-tinted glasses to prevent me from seeing that. I wouldn't put him in the same class as your Class A divers (stand up Mr Eboue, Pires, Ronaldo, Drogba + 90% of Serie A & La Liga players inc. the keepers!)
Anyway, I don't think this really has anything to do with the 'crime' he's committed and it's not a reflection of him as a person. He's a fantastic and truly world class player so I hope when the dust settles he gets back mentally fit and healthy to mount another serious title challenge this season.
