Getting a receipt

Proof of purchase does not have to be a receipt as no store is legally obliged to provide one.

However it can be harder to provide proof of purchase without one, a bank statement will normally suffice.

this

im 99% sure that if you kick up a fuss and remind them of the above that they will instantly sort it out. a few companies have done with me.

its totally poor customer service to not accept your statement or card transaction details. far too many companies expecting people to just go out and buy a new 'thing'.

if you used a card they will have evidence of your purchase..when i was a manager at jjb store we were told all receipt's have to be kept a minimum of 3 years by law (by receipt i mean the one that goes into the till for companies records)

er... this :)

Can some one link me to the law document where that is stated and I'll fire off another email to them.

Just do Law 101. Ask them to show you the UK law (not their T&C) where it says a receipt must be issued. They won't be able to, hence it is unreasonable to insist upon presentation of a receipt for honouring the warranty. All that is needed is proof of purchase. I have done it before with no receipt, just date & time & item (I paid cash).

Apparently a copy of my statement showing date and where I bought it from isn't enough, so I'm going to have to wait until I get back to Aber to see if I can get a receipt from the store there.

Also the bloke at Buffalo called me the wrong name so I can't be bothered dealing with them now.

Actually, they are legally obliged to accept a bank statement as proof of purchase.

Just noticed this is Argos. Ah, how am I not surprised.

I too have had problems with Argos when trying to return stuff, the most notable one was a faulty PS3 controller which came with a PS3 bundle that I purchased which costed me 350 bucks less then 6 months ago. It went basically like this:

My controller broke so I went to my local store to ask for a replacement, they told me they didn't have any in but that they'd order some from another store that has it but it would take a month.

So, since I have 2 controllers anyway I thought, well, k I'll just wait. It's not their fault they don't have it in stock right?

Month later I go there, a different manager tells me they still don't have it and it will be another 2 weeks, so I'm started to get a bit p off but okay , I wait.

2 weeks later, they still don't have them in stock but they have it in another store 50 miles away from me. So I thought to myself okay, this is taking the ****, so I ask the girl if she can just refund me the controller so I can buy it somewhere else, this comes to an arguement until the manager steps in and starts saying that he doesn't have to give me a controller as the purchase was of a PS3 and not a controller. Which I reply, okay, would you rather give me a whole new PS3 + Controller then? :D Anyway, ended up with nothing because they didn't have it anyway.

So I call their customer care team, first person I get tells me that she's going to contact the store, I wait and wait and nothing so I call back, the person called the wrong store! So the wrong store calls me and tells me I can go pick it up and I tell them er, I don't know who you are but I don't live in that town, it's about 50 miles away from here.

So anyway I call argos customer care team again, lady starts argue to me on the phone to which I start getting really ****ed off and since I'm a law student and frankly hate when people are trying to tell me that they don't have to do something when legally they bloody hell do, I go on a mini-lawyer rage in to which I happily quote her the SOGA act aswel as the European directive 99/44/EC :D. I demand to speak to a manager and I don't know what the girl said but the manager straight away told me she was very sorry and they were going to send me a check for the value of a controller and I could even keep the old one.

Bottom line: Argos customer service really sucks, don't waste your time with anyone who isn't in a manager position and make sure they know you know your rights as it seems like they like to profit from people's ignorance.
