Getting an Aussie Work Visa?

Hi all,

How difficult is it to attain a Aussies work visa? I have a first class honours degree from the university of Leeds (computing + AI) and my wife has both a degree (Business Administration) and soon a masters in Marketing. Both young with a very decent work history.

We would love to visit Aus for a year to work and travel, im told we have pretty good chances of getting in, especially as I see there are jobs upon jobs available for both myself and her.

Now, I dont really want to apply for Citizenship (im already a UK and Canada passport holder), but just want a work visa. From what I know, these can be obtained before you even have a job.

Could anyone with first hand experiance give any more details? Time frames, fee, if its possible it or not etc.

Finally, is it possible to have tri-nationality? I.e. 3 recognised passports?

Thanks all,
TM

Do a quick google and you'll find a few companies who do this for you. You will have to provide some details to them, prove you have a passport valid for the stay, and also prove you have some means of support (a few grand in the bank) for the first 1-2mths when you get over there in case you don't find a job. Oh, you'll also need a plane ticket (think it has to be a return also). You can also only work for the same employer for a 6mth period and not a day longer. Oh, i think you have to be under 31 also. Think the fee was about £150.

I applied for my g/f's brother on the net, he got a reply within 2 days and a confirmation of visa came through email 7 days after online application. When he get's over there in feb they stamp his passport on entry and that is when his 12mths visa begins (i.e. you can apply now and fly out in July and the 12mth only starts in July).

Wow, thats very very quick. Do you know what sort of visa it was? i.e. a student one or a skilled professional one? I'm looking for the latter, which lasts for 4 years and I would assume doesnt have the 6 month job limit.

But thanks for the reponse, I can't belive how quick the visa came through.

His was the 12mth working holiday visa, which can be extended to 24mths while over there. Cant help on the other types of visa, but i'm sure if you give one of those companies a ring they will help out.

Skilled workers visa will be the one you want and provided you have a degree and no criminal record will be extremely easy to get.

Take a look on this page

Or you could come over here on a working holiday visa then get a company to sponsor you.

If you can't find a company to sponsor you then provided you have a degree there are recruitment agencies that will find you a job and sponsor you for a % of your salary, usually around 10%.

Free Spirit is one such company.

A criminal record will not necessarily exclude you from acquiring a visa. Generally, all they require is evidence that you are not an habitual criminal. A prison term will more than likely exclude you as will drugs and sex related crime. Again. BE is the place for all the answers.

Guys, this is absolutely amazing, exactly what I was looking for.

Me and the Mrs are most likely looking togo in 18-20 months time, so when would be an appropriate time to get the ball rolling?

Thanks all,
TM

My brother has returned recently from a 12 month working Visa In Aus. He loved it. Although not highly skilled (trained chef) work was easy to come by.

He's looking to move back over this year.

Can't you just sneak in and claim asylum when you get there?
Whilst they sort it all out they should house, feed and clothe you.
If you get ill they will pay for treatment.
If you have a kid whilst you are there then they are guaranteed citizenship.
Bargain.

Except they are talking about housing asylum seekers offshore till they are processed :)
Although the worst people for overstaying their visas in Australia are Brits :)

Yes it is. My missus has an Aus, NZ and UK passport. She also has HK citizenship card (equivilent of a passport).

I thought a criminal record was a prerequisite for attaining a visa?! Double standard I tell ye! :p

Apologies - the thread wouldn't have been complete without a little casual racism

On a serious note, I didn't realise it was so easy to apply for a visa, might actually look into it more seriously now.

Well i have done to Visa thing to work in Australia. I got sponsorship from an employer who offered me a job.

Start to finish i think the application for the 457 (temporary work) visa took 6 months, but i know it can be done in 2. They say temporary but the visa is valid for 4 years. After 2 years he will process my application for residency (has to be instigated by the employer).

Residency will mean that you are not tied to one employer through the visa and are free to seek employment elsewhere if you choose,

The beauty of the 457 is that you can include your partner&children on the one visa and they are all entitled to work under it (if they are old enough of course). The only restriction for partners/kids is that they cannot work for Government agencies.

Only after 3 years of residency can you think about applying for Citizenship if you so chose.

Other than the 457 route you could try the Skilled Migration visa (i dont qualify sadly) for which you will need to be skilled in one of the jobs in demand

Hope some of that helps
