Getting Idea's

Go and take one for a spin, Ford do try to build fairly good handling cars (As far as budget small family hatchbacks go)

Why?

I didn't mind the one I drove as a learner but it was a 1.7 CDTi 80ps, though a 1.6 16v would be on par with my 1.2 Corsa performance wise?

Your 1.2 corsa was poor performance wise, do you really want to be on par with it?

How about an MX5, or does it have to be a derv?

It doesn't match other suggestions in here, but it'd certainly be fun, and fast enough.

I'm open to petrol or derv.

I just see the MX5 as a womans car though :o
But I know there great.

I cant say much as I had a Corsa :p

Welcome to diesels around town from cold.

At last! Some sense!

Whilst I currently drive a diesel, and do get very good economy on a long motorway journey, diesels seem to have disproportionately
poor fuel economy when cold. Having a diesel for short journeys about town is not what they are designed for.

I would imagine that the difference between hooning a 2.0 diesel around town versus a 2.0 petrol is less than at a constant 60mph, say.

In the mondeo, even if the temp guage tells me the engine is warm, I notice a reasonable jump in economy after about 15-20miles.

A 1.6 16 valve will not be on a par with your 1.2 corsa. If it's anything like my 1.6 16v I'll blow it into the reeds.

On paper it has more torque and bhp but similar 0-60 times

I think theres a 105ps and 115ps Petrol version.

Just had the insurance ring me with an offer, but a letter will be sent out.

£5000 but what happens with my finance?

That 5k goes to your finance company then Gap cover the rest. iirc that's what happened to me.

Right so an offer of £5000 was made by the insurance.

I phoned up the GAP finance team who told me not to accept the £5000 offer because they can possibly get more, lots of paperwork coming my way.

The franchised dealership who put me on the Platinum level and were telling me I'd get full value of the vehicle(2006 prices) which was £6495 but will I keep every penny of this? Or pay off the remaining £1295

:( Nightmare after nightmare.

The longer this drags on, i'm thinking will my payout become less should I take the car insurances offer?

in my courtesy 320D, i managed to get an average of 28mpg over 3500 miles, including a fair amount of long haul motorway with cruise @ 85.......

I've done far less motorway work with the 330i and a lot more backroad blasting and i'm yet to have a tank average less than 22mpg in the same number of miles, and havn't done any long haul motorway trips (bar the 28 mpg 300 mile trip coming from collecting the car and even that was interupted by 60 miles or so of welsh B roads), and generally i drive quicker in the 330 as well.

so, 6mpg difference between a 2007 7k mile old 320D and a 2002 113k mile old 330i and the 330i has had a harder life.................makes me REALLY wish i'd bought a diesel

That's pretty horrendous economy tbh.

Thinking back, a hired 525d auto I drove only got 35mpg with mostly motorway journeys... BMW diesels don't seem too good...

My 530d gives me about 29mpg on my 10 mile journey to work driven pretty hard. If i get it on a motorway at 80 then it will return well in the high 40s, if im at my normal 90-95 cruising speed then it drops quite a bit down to 34mpg. Deisel engines do need quite a few miles on them to loosen up nicely and mine is still getting better now with 8.5k miles on it, its a bit unfair to show a new cars mpg as that isnt what it will be when its loosened up.

On a side note my wife has a golf 1.9TDI(105bhp) which was her company car in April and that is returning 48mpg on her 8 mile run to work, mixed town and dual carraige way in rush hour each way.
