Calm down :)
Those photos are good but they are quite soft. The S2 IS could produce similar stuff, maybe even better with the longer lens.
Don't get carried away thinking a batter camera will produce improved photos - it's not always the case :)

Heres my attempt from the cleveland hills

Sadly i found out the a £20 tripod isnt really stable enough for the sigma 80-400 so when the moon went red it couldnt really get any decent ones.

Antc - As im an utter noobie with this camera atm (not really gotten in to it yet as im waiting for better weather) can the 400D achieve the same shot you did? what equipment would i need to invest in?

Hi, i would say the 400d can definately achive this kind of shot yes. Afterall, i used a 350d and the 400d is an upgrade to my camera :)

with regards to the equiptment you need to invest in the world is your oyster so to speak. its all dependant on budget. i used my canon 100-400L series lens @ the 400mm end, which given the crop factor of the sensor works out to be 640mm. now remembering that this is at least a 100% crop of the original image i could have done with a much longer lens

i found towards the end of the eclipse due to my lens being F5.6 at the long end it wasnt registering the slight redness in the moon which i got where i live, i think an F2.8 lens may have captured this but i cant be sure. also its definately worth getting a sturdy tripod for this type of shot and also a cable shutter release which is how i took my shot, as it would be near impossible to do handheld.

hope this helps, if you want/need to know anything else please ask :)

thanks

Antc

Superb pics here. Well done.

I saw the eclipse last night. First the almost totally covering of the moon leaving just a bright crescent, then later the almost full red shots as per above. Can anyone explain what I was seeing?

The atmosphere of the earth acts as a large lens. the reason why you see a sunset is because the red end of the spectrum is refracted more than the other frequencies. So when the earth moves into the direct line between the sun and the moon, the moon essentially sees a sunset all the way round the earth. In short, the earth acts as a lens that focuses the red light from the sun onto the moon. Makes for an awsome spectacle (SP?)

Yeah, through my bedroom window, which kept misting up due to the wife using her hot hair dryer at the same time. I tried to keep it as clear as poss, wiping it every other bloody second :D
I think I could have got better had I known what half the settings do :)
I took most of them on ISO 80 or 100 i think, and just set the manual focus as far as it would go, as auto focus kept focussing on the window.

Got a few from last night. Taken with my 350D, Carl Zeiss Jenna DDR M42 135mm F3.5, M42 2X tele converter. (total lens cost, about £30).

First of the moon before eclipse, 1/90th, ISO 100, F8. on lens + 2stops for tele:

Next two during eclipse, 1sec, ISO1600, F4 on lens + 2 stops for tele.

all 100% crops, hence why the last two are rather noisy!

Here is one of the many shots i took, does anyone know what the 3 objects are in my image?

I really like that shot. I would imagin that the three white dots are satelites.

Is that the Sigma 80-400 OS? If so how do you like it as I'm considering selling my 170-500 to fund one.

I was also out there taking shots of the lunar eclipse but at one point I couldn't for the life of me find the moon looking through the camera, I was really stumped as to where it had gone, I checked my camera over again and again and then the penny dropped, I had left the lens cap on..............

:D

Thanks for the info there. Since im waiting for better weather my aim with photography is mainly landscape shots as i think SE UK has some amazing places to take decent shots of & when i went to Lake Garda (Italy) its inspired me to do this also.

Another thing im wanting to do is motorsport so i gather id need a very good zoom rate for this also.

Heres another cliche'd montage for you all!

Slapped 5bjoshua photography on there for a laugh! :p

I am a complete photoshop novice so forgive my skills! Is there anyway to get the images perfectly equal distances apart easily?

Damn right, going to have to source a converter from somewhere, even 10.7x on my camera was too small :(

Some fantastic shots in here and in the GD thread, but I cant help but wonder if we should be doing something better on a Saturday night :D

I'm thinking of a s9600 or a Canon S3, and even with such a zoom, is this the best that can be done with the former camera? (make no mistake, i do like it)

There is a good explanation of it here :)

Well, I've only had the camera a few weeks so really it was mostly trial and error.

The last pic was taken in a fairly bright car park so I couldnt pick the moon up on the LCD, so it was basically shoot and hope.

I am seriously contemplating a 2x or 3x telephoto converter for the camera, have seen a few on the bay for around £50.

The first pic isn't a 100% crop BTW, the 2nd is.

I'm fairly happy with the camera, but I did weigh it up against the S3 IS. If the 12x zoom is more important to you then get the Canon :)
